1 After A2 Kin 24:10-16; 2 Chr 36:10; Jer 27:20; 29:1, 2Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the officials of Judah with the craftsmen and smiths from Jerusalem and had brought them to Babylon, the Loʀᴅ showed me: behold, two BAmos 8:1baskets of figs set before the temple of the Loʀᴅ! 2 One basket had very good figs, like AMic 7:1; Nah 3:12first-ripe figs, and the other basket had BIs 5:4, 7; Jer 29:17very bad figs which could not be eaten due to rottenness. 3 Then the Loʀᴅ said to me, “AJer 1:11, 13; Amos 8:2; Zech 4:2What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “Figs, the good figs, very good; and the bad figs, very bad, which cannot be eaten due to rottenness.”

4 Then the word of the Loʀᴅ came to me, saying, 5 “Thus says the Loʀᴅ God of Israel, ‘Like these good figs, so I will regard ANah 1:7; Zech 13:9as good the captives of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans. 6  ‘For I will set My eyes on them for good, and I will AJer 12:15; 29:10; 32:37; Ezek 11:17bring them again to this land; and I will BJer 31:4; 32:41; 33:7; 42:10build them up and not overthrow them, and I will CJer 32:41plant them and not pluck them up. 7  ‘I will give them a ADeut 30:6; Jer 31:33; 32:40; Ezek 11:19; 36:26heart to know Me, for I am the Loʀᴅ; and they will be BIs 51:16; Jer 7:23; 30:22; 31:33; 32:38; Ezek 14:11; Zech 8:8; Heb 8:10My people, and I will be their God, for they will C1 Sam 7:3; Ps 119:2; Jer 29:13return to Me with their whole heart.

8 ‘But like the AJer 29:17bad figs which cannot be eaten due to rottenness—indeed, thus says the Loʀᴅ—so I will 1Lit give upabandon BJer 39:5; Ezek 12:12, 13Zedekiah king of Judah and his officials, and the CJer 39:9remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land and the ones who dwell in the land of DJer 44:1, 26-30Egypt. 9  ‘I will AJer 15:4; 29:18; 34:17make them a terror and an evil for all the kingdoms of the earth, as a B1 Kin 9:7; Ps 44:13, 14reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a CIs 65:15curse in all places where I will scatter them. 10  ‘I will send the AIs 51:19; Jer 21:9; 27:8; Ezek 5:12-17sword, the famine and the pestilence upon them until they are destroyed from the land which I gave to them and their forefathers.’ ”
