1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Loʀᴅ, saying, 2 “AJer 17:19; 26:2Stand in the gate of the Loʀᴅ’s house and proclaim there this word and say, ‘Hear the word of the Loʀᴅ, all you of Judah, who enter by these gates to worship the Loʀᴅ!’ ” 3 Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel, “AJer 4:1; 7:5; 18:11; 26:13Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place. 4  “AJer 7:8; Mic 3:11Do not trust in deceptive words, saying, ‘1Lit They areThis is the temple of the Loʀᴅ, the temple of the Loʀᴅ, the temple of the Loʀᴅ.’ 5  “For AIs 1:19; Jer 4:1, 2if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly B1 Kin 6:12; Jer 21:12; 22:3practice justice between a man and his neighbor, 6 if you do not oppress the alien, the 1Or fatherlessAEx 22:21-24; Jer 5:28orphan, or the widow, and do not shed BJer 2:34; 19:4innocent blood in this place, nor CDeut 6:14, 15; 8:19; 11:28; Jer 13:10walk after other gods to your own ruin, 7 then I will let you ADeut 4:40dwell in this place, in the BJer 3:18land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

8 “Behold, you are trusting in AJer 7:4; 28:15deceptive words to no avail. 9  “Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery and swear falsely, and 1Or burn incenseAJer 11:13, 17offer sacrifices to Baal and walk after BEx 20:3; Jer 7:6; 19:4other gods that you have not known, 10 then AEzek 23:39come and stand before Me in BJer 7:11, 14, 30; 32:34this house, which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—that you may do all these abominations? 11  “Has AIs 56:7this house, which is called by My name, become a BMatt 21:13; Mark 11:17; Luke 19:46den of robbers in your sight? Behold, CJer 29:23I, even I, have seen it,” declares the Loʀᴅ.

12 “But go now to My place which was in AJudg 18:31; Jer 26:6Shiloh, where I BJosh 18:1, 10made My name dwell at the first, and C1 Sam 4:10, 11, 22; Ps 78:60-64see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel. 13  “And now, because you have done all these things,” declares the Loʀᴅ, “and I spoke to you, AJer 7:25rising up early and BJer 35:17speaking, but you did not hear, and I CProv 1:24; Is 65:12; 66:4called you but you did not answer, 14 therefore, I will do to the ADeut 12:5; 1 Kin 9:7house which is called by My name, BJer 7:4in which you trust, and to the place which I gave you and your fathers, as I CJer 7:12did to Shiloh. 15  “I will AJer 15:1; 52:3cast you out of My sight, as I have cast out all your brothers, all the 1Lit seedoffspring of BPs 78:67; Hos 7:13; 9:13; 12:1Ephraim.

16 “As for you, AEx 32:10; Deut 9:14; Jer 11:14do not pray for this people, and do not lift up cry or prayer for them, and do not intercede with Me; for I do not hear you. 17  “Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18  “The 1Lit sonschildren gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they AJer 19:13pour out drink offerings to other gods in order to BDeut 32:16, 21; 1 Kin 14:9; 16:2; Jer 11:17; Ezek 8:17spite Me. 19  “AJob 35:6; 1 Cor 10:22Do they spite Me?” declares the Loʀᴅ. “Is it not themselves they spite, to 1Lit their faces’their own BJer 9:19; 15:9; 22:22shame?” 20 Therefore thus says the Lord 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ, “Behold, My AIs 42:25; Jer 6:11, 12; 42:18; Lam 2:3-5; 4:11anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and on beast and on the BJer 8:13; 11:16trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and not be quenched.”

21 Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel, “Add your AIs 1:11; Jer 6:20; 14:12; Amos 5:22burnt offerings to your sacrifices and BEzek 33:25; Hos 8:13eat flesh. 22  “For I did not A1 Sam 15:22; Ps 51:16; Hos 6:6speak to your fathers, or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23  “But this is 1Lit the word whichwhat I commanded them, saying, ‘AEx 15:26; 16:32; Deut 6:3Obey My voice, and BEx 19:5, 6; Lev 26:12; Jer 11:4; 13:11I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, that it may CIs 3:10; Jer 38:20; 42:6be well with you.’ 24  “Yet they ADeut 29:19; Ps 81:11; Jer 11:8; Ezek 20:8, 13, 16, 21did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and 1Lit they wereBJer 15:6went backward and not forward. 25  “Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have A2 Chr 36:15; Jer 25:4; 29:19; Luke 11:49sent you all My servants the prophets, daily rising early and sending them. 26  “Yet they did not listen to Me or incline their ear, but ANeh 9:16; Jer 17:23; 19:15stiffened their neck; they BJer 16:12; Matt 23:32did more evil than their fathers.

27 “You shall AJer 1:7; 26:2; Ezek 2:7speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you; and you shall call to them, but they will BIs 50:2; 65:12; Zech 7:13not answer you. 28  “You shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that AJer 6:17; 11:10did not obey the voice of the Loʀᴅ their God or accept correction; 1Lit faithfulnessBIs 59:14, 15; Jer 9:5truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth.

32 “AJer 19:6, 11Therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares the Loʀᴅ, “when it will no longer be called Topheth, or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of the Slaughter; for they will B2 Kin 23:10bury in Topheth 1Or until there is no place leftbecause there is no other place. 33  “The ADeut 28:26; Ps 79:2; Jer 12:9; 19:7dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the sky and for the beasts of the earth; and no one will frighten them away. 34  “Then I will make to AIs 24:7, 8; Jer 16:9; 25:10; Ezek 26:13; Hos 2:11; Rev 18:23cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the BLev 26:33; Is 1:7; Jer 4:27land will become a ruin.
