4 I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “AIs 52:11; Jer 50:8; 51:6, 9, 45; 2 Cor 6:17Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive of her plagues; 5 for her sins have 1Lit joined togetherAJer 51:9piled up as high as heaven, and God has BRev 16:19remembered her iniquities. 6  “APs 137:8; Jer 50:15, 29Pay her back even as she has paid, and 1Lit double to hergive back to her double according to her deeds; in the BRev 17:4cup which she has mixed, mix twice as much for her. 7  “AEzek 28:2-8To the degree that she glorified herself and B1 Tim 5:11; Rev 18:3, 9lived 1Or luxuriouslysensuously, to the same degree give her torment and mourning; for she says in her heart, ‘CIs 47:7f; Zeph 2:15I sɪᴛ as ᴀ qᴜᴇᴇɴ ᴀɴᴅ I ᴀᴍ ɴoᴛ ᴀ wɪᴅow, and will never see mourning.’ 8  “For this reason AIs 47:9; Jer 50:31f; Rev 18:10in one day her plagues will come, 1Lit deathpestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be BRev 17:16burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her CJer 50:34; Rev 11:17fis strong.

9 “And ARev 17:2; 18:3the kings of the earth, who committed acts of immorality and B1 Tim 5:11; Rev 18:3, 7lived 1Or luxuriouslysensuously with her, will CEzek 26:16f; 27:35weep and lament over her when they DRev 14:11; 18:18; 19:3see the smoke of her burning, 10 ARev 18:15, 17standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘BRev 18:16, 19Woe, woe, CRev 11:8; 16:19; 18:16, 18, 19, 21the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in DRev 17:12; 18:8, 17, 19one hour your judgment has come.’

11 “And the AEzek 27:9-25; Rev 18:3, 15, 19, 23merchants of the earth BEzek 27:27-34weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargoes any more— 12 cargoes of AEzek 27:12-22; Rev 17:4gold and silver and precious 1Lit stonestones and pearls and fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet, and every kind of citron wood and every article of ivory and every article made from very costly wood and 2Or brassbronze and iron and marble, 13 and cinnamon and 1Gr amomonspice and incense and perfume and frankincense and wine and olive oil and fine flour and wheat and cattle and sheep, and cargoes of horses and chariots and 2Lit bodiesslaves and 3Lit souls of people (Gr anthropoi)A1 Chr 5:21; Ezek 27:13; 1 Tim 1:10human lives. 14  “The fruit 1Lit of your soul’s desireyou long for has gone from you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and men will no longer find them. 15  “The ARev 18:3merchants of BRev 18:12, 13these things, who became rich from her, will CRev 18:10stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning, 16 saying, ‘ARev 18:10, 19Woe, woe, BRev 18:10, 18, 19, 21the great city, she who CRev 17:4was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and 1Lit gildedadorned with gold and precious 2Lit stone and pearlstones and pearls; 17 for in ARev 18:10one hour such great wealth has been laid BRev 17:16; 18:19waste!’ And CEzek 27:28fevery shipmaster and every 1Lit one who sails to a placepassenger and sailor, and as many as make their living by the sea, ARev 18:10stood at a distance, 18 and were AEzek 27:30crying out as they BRev 18:9saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘CEzek 27:32; Rev 13:4What city is like DRev 18:10the great city?’ 19  “And they threw AJosh 7:6; Job 2:12; Lam 2:10dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying, ‘BRev 18:10Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea CRev 18:3, 15became rich by her 1Lit costlinesswealth, for in BRev 18:10one hour she has been laid DRev 17:16; 18:17waste!’ 20  “AJer 51:48; Rev 12:12Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you 1Or holy onessaints and BLuke 11:49fapostles and prophets, because CRev 6:10; 18:6ff; 19:2God has 2Lit judged your judgment of herpronounced judgment for you against her.”

21 Then 1Lit onea ARev 5:2; 10:1strong angel BJer 51:63ftook up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon, CRev 18:10the great city, be thrown down with violence, and DEzek 26:21will not be found any longer. 22  “And AIs 24:8; Ezek 26:13; Matt 9:23the sound of harpists and musicians and flute-players and trumpeters will not be heard in you any longer; and no craftsman of any craft will be found in you any longer; and the BEccl 12:4; Jer 25:10sound of a mill will not be heard in you any longer; 23 and the light of a lamp will not shine in you any longer; and the AJer 7:34; 16:9voice of the bridegroom and bride will not be heard in you any longer; for your BIs 23:8; Rev 6:15; 18:3merchants were the great men of the earth, because all the nations were deceived CNah 3:4; Rev 9:21by your sorcery. 24  “And in her was found the ARev 16:6; 17:6blood of prophets and of 1Or holy onessaints and of BMatt 23:35all who have been slain on the earth.”
