1 Then the ARev 8:2fifth angel sounded, and I saw a BRev 8:10star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the CRev 1:18key of the 1Lit shaft of the abyssDLuke 8:31; Rev 9:2, 11bottomless pit was given to him. 2 He opened the 1V 1, note 1bottomless pit, and AGen 19:28; Ex 19:18smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and BJoel 2:2, 10the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. 3 Then out of the smoke came AEx 10:12-15; Rev 9:7locusts 1Lit intoupon the earth, and power was given them, as the B2 Chr 10:11, 14; Ezek 2:6; Rev 9:5, 10scorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were told not to ARev 6:6hurt the BRev 8:7grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the CEzek 9:4; Rev 7:2, 3seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And 1Lit it was given to themthey were not permitted to kill 2Lit themanyone, but to torment for ARev 9:10five months; and their torment was like the torment of a B2 Chr 10:11, 14; Ezek 2:6; Rev 9:3, 10scorpion when it 3Lit strikesstings a man. 6 And in those days AJob 3:21; 7:15; Jer 8:3; Rev 6:16men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death flees from them.

7 The 1Lit likenessesAJoel 2:4appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men. 8 They had hair like the hair of women, and their AJoel 1:6teeth were like the teeth of lions. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the AJer 47:3; Joel 2:5sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like A2 Chr 10:11, 14; Ezek 2:6; Rev 9:3, 5scorpions, and stings; and in their BRev 9:19tails is their power to hurt men for CRev 9:5five months. 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the ALuke 8:31; Rev 9:1, 2abyss; his name in BJohn 5:2; Rev 16:16Hebrew is 1I.e. destructionCJob 26:6; 28:22; 31:12; Ps 88:11 mg; Prov 15:11Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name 2I.e. destroyerApollyon.

12 ARev 8:13; 11:14The first woe is past; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.

13 Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard 1Lit one voicea voice from the 2Two early mss do not contain fourfour AEx 30:2f, 10horns of the BRev 8:3golden altar which is before God, 14 one saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the ARev 7:1four angels who are bound at the BGen 15:18; Deut 1:7; Josh 1:4; Rev 16:12great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were ARev 20:7released, so that they would kill a BRev 8:7; 9:18third of 1Gr anthropoimankind. 16 The number of the armies of the horsemen was ARev 5:11two hundred million; BRev 7:4I heard the number of them. 17 And 1Lit thus I sawthis is how I saw ADan 8:2; 9:21in the vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire and of hyacinth and of 2I.e. burning sulphurBRev 9:18; 14:10; 19:20; 20:10; 21:8brimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and CRev 11:5out of their mouths proceed fire and smoke and 2I.e. burning sulphurBRev 9:18; 14:10; 19:20; 20:10; 21:8brimstone. 18 A ARev 8:7; 9:15third of 1Gr anthropoimankind was killed by these three plagues, by the BRev 9:17fire and the smoke and the 2I.e. burning sulphurbrimstone which proceeded out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.

20 The rest of 1Gr anthropoimankind, who were not killed by these plagues, ARev 2:21did not repent of BDeut 4:28; Jer 1:16; Mic 5:13; Acts 7:41the works of their hands, so as not to C1 Cor 10:20worship demons, and DPs 115:4-7; 135:15-17; Dan 5:23the idols of gold and of silver and of brass and of stone and of wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21 and they ARev 9:20did not repent of their murders nor of their BIs 47:9, 12; Rev 18:23sorceries nor of their CRev 17:2, 4, 5immorality nor of their thefts.
