Job’s Life Seems Futile
And are not his days like the days of BJob 14:6a hired man?
2 “As a slave who pants for the shade,
And as a hired man who eagerly waits for his wages,
3 So am I allotted months of vanity,
And AJob 16:7nights of trouble are appointed me.
4 “When I ADeut 28:67; Job 7:13, 14lie down I say,
‘When shall I arise?’
But the night continues,
And I am 1Lit sated withcontinually tossing until dawn.
5 “My AJob 2:7; 17:14flesh is clothed with worms and a crust of dirt,
My skin hardens and runs.
6 “My days are AJob 9:25swifter than a weaver’s shuttle,
And come to an end BJob 13:15; 14:19; 17:15, 16; 19:10without hope.
My eye will BJob 9:25not again see good.
8 “The AJob 8:18; 20:9eye of him who sees me will behold me no longer;
Your eyes will be on me, but BJob 7:21I will not be.
9 “When a AJob 30:15cloud vanishes, it is gone,
So BJob 3:13-19he who goes down to C2 Sam 12:23; Job 11:8; 14:13; 17:13, 16Sheol does not come up.
10 “He will not return again to his house,
Nor will AJob 8:18; 20:9; 27:21, 23his place know him anymore.
11 “Therefore AJob 10:1; 21:4; 23:2; Ps 40:9I will not restrain my mouth;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit,
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
12 “Am I the sea, or AEzek 32:2, 3the sea monster,
That You set a guard over me?
13 “If I say, ‘AJob 7:4; Ps 6:6My bed will comfort me,
My couch will 1Lit bearease my complaint,’
14 Then You frighten me with dreams
And terrify me by visions;
15 So that my soul would choose suffocation,
Death rather than my 1Lit bonespains.
Leave me alone, BJob 7:7for my days are but a breath.
17 “AJob 22:2; Ps 8:4; 144:3; Heb 2:6What is man that You magnify him,
And that You 1Lit set Your heart onare concerned about him,
18 That AJob 14:3You examine him every morning
And try him every moment?
Nor let me alone until I swallow my spittle?
20 “AJob 35:3, 6Have I sinned? What have I done to You,
O BPs 36:6watcher of men?
Why have You set me as Your target,
So that I am a burden to myself?
21 “Why then AJob 9:28; 10:14do You not pardon my transgression
And take away my iniquity?
For now I will BJob 10:9lie down in the dust;
And You will seek me, CJob 7:8but I will not be.”
