Now it was the Sabbath on that day. 10 So AJohn 1:19; 5:15, 16, 18the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is the Sabbath, and BNeh 13:19; Jer 17:21f; Matt 12:2; Luke 6:2; John 7:23; 9:16it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.” 11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’” 12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk’?” 13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not AMark 2:5; John 8:11sin anymore, BEzra 9:14so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15 The man went away, and told AJohn 1:19; 5:16, 18the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this reason AJohn 1:19; 5:10, 15, 18the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”

18 For this reason therefore AJohn 1:19; 5:15, 16the Jews BJohn 5:16; 7:1were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, CJohn 10:33; 19:7making Himself equal with God.

19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, AMatt 26:39; John 5:30; 6:38; 8:28; 12:49; 14:10the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever 1Lit that Onethe Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20  “AMatt 3:17; John 3:35; 2 Pet 1:17For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him BJohn 14:12greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 21  “For just as the Father raises the dead and ARom 4:17; 8:11gives them life, even so BJohn 11:25the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22  “For not even the Father judges anyone, but AJohn 5:27; 9:39; Acts 10:42; 17:31He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. ALuke 10:16; 1 John 2:23He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and AJohn 3:18; 12:44; 20:31; 1 John 5:13believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and BJohn 3:18does not come into judgment, but has C1 John 3:14passed out of death into life.

25  “Truly, truly, I say to you, AJohn 4:21, 23; 5:28an hour is coming and now is, when BLuke 15:24the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who CJohn 6:60; 8:43, 47; 9:27hear will live. 26  “For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He AJohn 1:4; 6:57gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to AJohn 9:39; Acts 10:42; 17:31execute judgment, because He is 1Or a son of manthe Son of Man. 28  “Do not marvel at this; for AJohn 4:21an hour is coming, in which BJohn 11:24; 1 Cor 15:52all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; ADan 12:2; Matt 25:46; Acts 24:15those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

30 “AJohn 5:19I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and BJohn 8:16My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but CJohn 4:34; 6:38the will of Him who sent Me.

31 “AJohn 8:14If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not 1I.e. admissible as legal evidencetrue. 32  “There is AJohn 5:37another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
