The Plot to Kill Jesus
AMatt 7:28When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, AMatt 26:2-5: Mark 14:1, 2; Luke 22:1, 2You know that after two days BJohn 11:55; 13:1the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be CMatt 10:4handed over for crucifixion.”
AJohn 11:47Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in BMatt 26:58, 69; 27:27; Mark 14:54, 66; 15:16; Luke 22:55; John 18:15the court of the high priest, named CMatt 26:57; Luke 3:2; John 11:49; 18:13, 14, 24, 28; Acts 4:6Caiaphas; and they AMatt 12:14plotted together to seize Jesus by stealth and kill Him. But they were saying, “Not during the festival, AMatt 27:24otherwise a riot might occur among the people.”
The Precious Ointment
AMatt 26:6-13: Mark 14:3-9;Luke 7:37-39; John 12:1-8Now when Jesus was in BMatt 21:17Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper, ALuke 7:37fa woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume, and she poured it on His head as He reclined at the table. But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste?  “For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to Me. 11  “For you always have ADeut 15:11; Mark 14:7; John 12:8the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. 12  “For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it AJohn 19:40to prepare Me for burial. 13  “Truly I say to you, AMark 14:9wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”
Judas’s Bargain
14 AMatt 26:14-16: Mark 14:10, 11; Luke 22:3-6Then one of the twelve, named BMatt 10:4; 26:25, 47; 27:3; John 6:71; 12:4; 13:26; Acts 1:16Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me 1Lit and I willto 2Or deliverAMatt 10:4betray Him to you?” And BEx 21:32; Zech 11:12they weighed out thirty 3I.e. silver shekelspieces of silver to him. 16 From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to 1Or deliverbetray 2Lit HimJesus.
17 AMatt 26:17-19: Mark 14:12-16; Luke 22:7-13Now on the first day of BEx 12:18-20Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” 18 And He said, “Go into the city to AMark 14:13; Luke 22:10a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “BJohn 7:6, 8My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ” 19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
The Last Passover
20 AMatt 26:20-24: Mark 14:17-21Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating, He said, ALuke 22:21-23; John 13:21fTruly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 Being deeply grieved, they 1Or one after anothereach one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?” 23 And He answered, APs 41:9; John 13:18, 26He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24  “The Son of Man is to go, AMatt 26:31, 54, 56; Mark 9:12; Luke 24:25-27, 46; Acts 17:2f; 26:22f; 1 Cor 15:3; 1 Pet 1:10fjust as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! BMatt 18:7; Mark 14:21It would have been good 1Lit for him if that man had not been bornfor that man if he had not been born.” 25 And AMatt 26:14Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, BMatt 23:7; 26:49Rabbi?” Jesus *said to him, CMatt 26:64; 27:11; Luke 22:70You have said it yourself.”
The Lord’s Supper Instituted
26 AMatt 26:26-29: Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:17-20; 1 Cor 11:23-25;1 Cor 10:16While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and 1Lit having blessedBMatt 14:19after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for AEx 24:8; Heb 9:20this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for BMatt 20:28many for forgiveness of sins. 29  “But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
30 AMatt 26:30-35: Mark 14:26-31; Luke 22:31-34After singing a hymn, they went out to BMatt 21:1the Mount of Olives.
31 Then Jesus *said to them, “You will all 1Or stumbleAMatt 11:6fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘BZech 13:7I wɪʟʟ sᴛʀɪᴋᴇ ᴅowɴ ᴛʜᴇ sʜᴇᴘʜᴇʀᴅ, ᴀɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇ sʜᴇᴇᴘ oꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ꜰʟocᴋ sʜᴀʟʟ ʙᴇ CJohn 16:32scᴀᴛᴛᴇʀᴇᴅ.’ 32  “But after I have been raised, AMatt 28:7, 10, 16; Mark 16:7I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may 1Or stumblefall away because of You, I will never fall away.” 34 Jesus said to him, AMatt 26:75; John 13:38Truly I say to you that BMark 14:30this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter *said to Him, “AJohn 13:37Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.
The Garden of Gethsemane
36 AMatt 26:36-46: Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:40-46Then Jesus *came with them to a place called BMark 14:32; Luke 22:39; John 18:1Gethsemane, and *said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 And He took with Him AMatt 4:21; 17:1; Mark 5:37Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and distressed. 38 Then He *said to them, AJohn 12:27My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and BMatt 26:40, 41keep watch with Me.”
39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let AMatt 20:22this cup pass from Me; BMatt 26:42; Mark 14:36; Luke 22:42; John 6:38yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not AMatt 26:38keep watch with Me for one hour? 41  “AMatt 26:38Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; BMark 14:38the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this AMatt 20:22cannot pass away unless I drink it, BMatt 26:39; Mark 14:36; Luke 22:42; John 6:38Your will be done.” 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. 45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, 1Or Keep on sleeping thereforeAre you still sleeping and resting? Behold, AMark 14:41; John 12:27; 13:1the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46  “Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”
Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest
47 AMatt 26:47-56: Mark 14:43-50; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:3-11While He was still speaking, behold, BMatt 26:14Judas, one of the twelve, came up 1Lit and with himaccompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” 49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, AMatt 23:7; 26:25Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, AMatt 20:13; 22:12Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.
51 And behold, AMark 14:47; Luke 22:50; John 18:10one of those who were with Jesus 1Lit extended the handreached and drew out his BLuke 22:38sword, and struck the AMark 14:47; Luke 22:50; John 18:10slave of the high priest and 2Lit took offcut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for AGen 9:6; Rev 13:10all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53  “Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve 1A legion equaled 6,000 troopsAMark 5:9, 15; Luke 8:30legions of BMatt 4:11angels? 54  “How then will AMatt 26:24the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”
55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? AMark 12:35; 14:49; Luke 4:20; 19:47; 20:1; 21:37; John 7:14, 28; 8:2, 20; 18:20Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56  “But all this has taken place to fulfill AMatt 26:24the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.
Jesus before Caiaphas
57 AMatt 26:57-68: Mark 14:53-65; John 18:12f, 19-24Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to BMatt 26:3Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58 But AJohn 18:15Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the BMatt 26:3courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the 1Or servantsCMatt 5:25; John 7:32, 45f; 19:6; Acts 5:22, 26officers to see the outcome.
59 Now the chief priests and the whole 1Or SanhedrinAMatt 5:22Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on ADeut 19:15two came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘AMatt 27:40; Mark 14:58; 15:29; John 2:19; Acts 6:14I am able to destroy the 1Or sanctuarytemple of God and to rebuild it 2Or afterin three days.’ ” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 63 But AMatt 27:12, 14; John 19:9Jesus kept silent. BMatt 26:63-66; Luke 22:67-71And the high priest said to Him, “I 1Or charge You under oathCLev 5:1adjure You by DMatt 16:16the living God, that You tell us whether You are 2I.e. the Messiahthe Christ, EMatt 4:3the Son of God.” 64 Jesus *said to him, AMatt 26:25You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, 1Or from now onhereafter you will see BPs 110:1; Mark 14:62ᴛʜᴇ Soɴ oꜰ Mᴀɴ sɪᴛᴛɪɴɢ ᴀᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ʀɪɢʜᴛ ʜᴀɴᴅ oꜰ Powᴇʀ, and CDan 7:13; Matt 16:27fcoᴍɪɴɢ oɴ ᴛʜᴇ cʟoᴜᴅs oꜰ ʜᴇᴀvᴇɴ.”
65 Then the high priest ANum 14:6; Mark 14:63; Acts 14:14tore his 1Or outer garmentsrobes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “ALev 24:16; John 19:7He deserves death!”
67 AIs 50:6; Matt 26:67, 68; Luke 22:63-65; John 18:22Then they BMatt 27:30; Mark 10:34spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others 1Or beat Him with rodsslapped Him, 68 and said, “AMark 14:65; Luke 22:64Prophesy to us, You 1I.e. the MessiahChrist; who is the one who hit You?”
Peter’s Denials
69 AMatt 26:69-75: Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:55-62; John 18:16-18, 25-27Now Peter was sitting outside in the BMatt 26:3courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; AMark 14:70; Luke 22:59; John 18:26for even the way you talk 1Lit makes you evidentgives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, AMatt 26:34Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
