The Lord’s Supper
Now before the Feast of AJohn 2:13; 11:55the Passover, Jesus knowing that BJohn 12:23His hour had come that He would depart out of this world CJohn 13:3; 16:28to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them 1Or to the uttermost; or eternallyto the end. During supper, AJohn 6:70; 13:27the devil having already put into the heart of BJohn 6:71Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him, Jesus, AJohn 3:35knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that BJohn 8:42He had come forth from God and was going back to God, *got up from supper, and *laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He ALuke 12:37; 17:8girded Himself.
Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet
Then He *poured water into the basin, and began to AGen 18:4; 19:2; 43:24; Judg 19:21; Luke 7:44; 1 Tim 5:10wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand AJohn 13:12ffhereafter.” Peter *said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, APs 51:2, 7; Ezek 36:25; Acts 22:16; 1 Cor 6:11; Heb 10:22If I do not wash you, BDeut 12:12; 2 Sam 20:1; 1 Kin 12:16you have no part with Me.” Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” 10 Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and AJohn 15:3; Eph 5:26you are clean, but not all of you. 11 For AJohn 6:64; 13:2He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
12 So when He had washed their feet, and AJohn 13:4taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13  “You call Me AJohn 11:28Teacher and BJohn 11:2; 1 Cor 12:3; Phil 2:11Lord; and 1Lit you say wellyou are right, for so I am. 14  “If I then, AJohn 11:2; 1 Cor 12:3; Phil 2:11the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15  “For I gave you A1 Pet 5:3an example that you also should do as I did to you. 16  “Truly, truly, I say to you, AMatt 10:24; Luke 6:40; John 15:20a slave is not greater than his master, nor is B2 Cor 8:23; Phil 2:25one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. 17  “If you know these things, you are AMatt 7:24ff; Luke 11:28; James 1:25blessed if you do them. 18  “AJohn 13:10fI do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have BJohn 6:70; 15:16, 19chosen; but it is CJohn 15:25; 17:12; 18:32; 19:24, 36that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘DPs 41:9; Matt 26:21ff; Mark 14:18f; Luke 22:21ff; John 13:21, 22, 26Hᴇ wʜo ᴇᴀᴛs Mʏ ʙʀᴇᴀᴅ ʜᴀs ʟɪꜰᴛᴇᴅ ᴜᴘ ʜɪs ʜᴇᴇʟ ᴀɢᴀɪɴsᴛ Mᴇ.’ 19  “From now on AJohn 14:29; 16:4I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that BJohn 8:24I am He. 20  “Truly, truly, I say to you, AMatt 10:40; Mark 9:37; Luke 9:48; 10:16; Gal 4:14he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
21 When Jesus had said this, He AJohn 11:33became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, that BMatt 26:21f; Mark 14:18ff; Luke 22:21ff; John 13:18, 22, 26one of you will 1Or hand Me overbetray Me.” 22 The disciples began looking at one another, AMatt 26:21ff; Mark 14:18ff; Luke 22:21ff; John 13:18, 21, 26at a loss to know of which one He was speaking. 23 There was reclining on AJohn 1:18Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, BJohn 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20whom Jesus loved. 24 So Simon Peter *gestured to him, and *said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking.” 25 He, AJohn 21:20leaning back thus on Jesus’ bosom, *said to Him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus then *answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He *took and *gave it to Judas, AJohn 6:71the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After the morsel, AMatt 4:10Satan then BLuke 22:3; John 13:2entered into him. Therefore Jesus *said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him. 29 For some were supposing, because Judas AJohn 12:6had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, “Buy the things we have need of BJohn 13:1for the feast”; or else, that he should CJohn 12:5give something to the poor. 30 So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and ALuke 22:53it was night.
31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus *said, “Now 1Or wasis AMatt 8:20the Son of Man BJohn 7:39glorified, and CJohn 14:13; 17:4; 1 Pet 4:11God 1Or wasis glorified in Him; 32 1Most early mss do not contain this phraseif God is glorified in Him, AJohn 17:1God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately. 33  “A1 John 2:1Little children, I am with you BJohn 7:33a little while longer. CJohn 7:34You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34  “A AJohn 15:12, 17; 1 John 2:7f; 3:11, 23; 2 John 5new commandment I give to you, BLev 19:18; Matt 5:44; Gal 5:14; 1 Thess 4:9; Heb 13:1; 1 Pet 1:22; 1 John 4:7that you love one another, CEph 5:2; 1 John 4:10feven as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35  “A1 John 3:14; 4:20By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
36 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, AJohn 13:33; 14:2; 16:5Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but BJohn 21:18f; 2 Pet 1:14you will follow later.” 37 Peter *said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? AJohn 13:37, 38: Matt 26:33-35; Mark 14:29-31; Luke 22:33-34I will lay down my life for You.” 38 Jesus *answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, AMark 14:30; John 18:27a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
