5 And AMatt 8:5-13: Luke 7:1-10when 1Lit HeJesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, imploring Him, 6 and saying, “1Or SirLord, my 2Lit boyservant is 3Lit thrown downlying AMatt 4:24paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented.” 7 Jesus *said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 But the centurion said, “1Or SirLord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just 2Lit say with a wordsay the word, and my 3Lit boyservant will be healed. 9  “For I also am a man under AMark 1:27; Luke 9:1authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” 10 Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith 1One early ms reads not even in Israelwith anyone in Israel. 11  “I say to you that many AIs 49:12; 59:19; Mal 1:11; Luke 13:29will come from east and west, and 1Or dinerecline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; 12 but AMatt 13:38the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into BMatt 22:13; 25:30the outer darkness; in that place CMatt 13:42, 50; 22:13; 24:51; 25:30; Luke 13:28there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; 1Or let it be done; i.e. a commandit shall be done for you AMatt 9:22, 29as you have believed.” And the 2Lit boyservant was healed that very 3Lit hourmoment.

14 AMatt 8:14-16: Mark 1:29-34; Luke 4:38-41When Jesus came into Peter’s 1Or househome, He saw his mother-in-law lying sick in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and 1Or servedwaited on Him. 16 When evening came, they brought to Him many AMatt 4:24who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and BMatt 4:23; 8:33healed all who were ill. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “AIs 53:4Hᴇ Hɪᴍsᴇʟꜰ ᴛooᴋ oᴜʀ ɪɴꜰɪʀᴍɪᴛɪᴇs ᴀɴᴅ 1Or removedcᴀʀʀɪᴇᴅ ᴀwᴀʏ oᴜʀ ᴅɪsᴇᴀsᴇs.”

18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around Him, AMark 4:35; Luke 8:22He gave orders to depart to the other side of the sea. 19 AMatt 8:19-22: Luke 9:57-60Then a scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” 20 Jesus *said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the 1Or skyair have 2Or roosting placesnests, but ADan 7:13; Matt 9:6; 12:8, 32, 40; 13:41; 16:13, 27f; 17:9; 19:28; 26:64; Mark 8:38; Luke 12:8; 18:8; 21:36; John 1:51; 3:13f; 6:27; 12:34; Acts 7:56the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 21 Another of the disciples said to Him, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus *said to him, “AMatt 9:9; Mark 2:14; Luke 9:59, 60; John 1:43; 21:19Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead.”

23 AMatt 8:23-27: Mark 4:36-41; Luke 8:22-25When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, there arose 1Lit a shakinga great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. 25 And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, “AMatt 8:2; 9:18Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” 26 He *said to them, “Why are you 1Or cowardlyafraid, AMatt 6:30; 14:31; 16:8; 17:20you men of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and 2Lit a great calm occurredit became perfectly calm. 27 The men were amazed, and said, “What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

28 AMatt 8:28-34: Mark 5:1-17; Luke 8:26-37When He came to the other side into the country of the Gadarenes, two men who were BMatt 4:24demon-possessed met Him as they were coming out of the tombs. They were so extremely violent that no one could pass by that way. 29 And they cried out, saying, “1Lit What is to us and to you (a Heb idiom)AJudg 11:12; 2 Sam 16:10; 19:22; 1 Kin 17:18; 2 Kin 3:13; 2 Chr 35:21; Mark 1:24; 5:7; Luke 4:34; 8:28; John 2:4What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before 2I.e. the appointed time of judgmentthe time?” 30 Now there was a herd of many swine feeding at a distance from them. 31 The demons began to entreat Him, saying, “If You are going to cast us out, send us into the herd of swine.” 32 And He said to them, “Go!” And they came out and went into the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the waters. 33 The herdsmen ran away, and went to the city and reported everything, 1Lit and the things ofincluding what had happened to the AMatt 4:24demoniacs. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, AAmos 7:12; Acts 16:39they implored Him to leave their region.
