The Suffering Servant
1 AJohn 12:38; Rom 10:16Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the arm of the Loʀᴅ been revealed?
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has BIs 52:14no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should 2Lit desirebe attracted to Him.
3 He was APs 22:6; Is 49:7; Luke 18:31-33despised and forsaken of men,
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was CMark 10:33, 34despised, and we did not DJohn 1:10, 11esteem Him.
And our 2Or painssorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
3Or Struck down bySmitten of BJohn 19:7God, and afflicted.
He was crushed for BIs 53:10; Rom 4:25; 1 Cor 15:3our iniquities;
And by D1 Pet 2:24, 25His scourging we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But the Loʀᴅ has caused the iniquity of us all
To 1Lit encounter Himfall on Him.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not AMatt 26:63; 27:12-14; Mark 14:61; 15:5; Luke 23:9; John 19:9open His mouth;
BActs 8:32, 33; Rev 5:6Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the 1Or lifeliving
AIs 53:5, 12For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
9 His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a AMatt 27:57-60rich man in His death,
BIs 42:1-3Because He had C1 Pet 2:22done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
10 But the Loʀᴅ was pleased
He will prolong His days,
And the 4Or will ofgood EIs 46:10pleasure of the Loʀᴅ will prosper in His hand.
11 As a result of the 1Or toilsome laboranguish of His soul,
By His BIs 45:25; Rom 5:18, 19knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will justify the many,
As He will CIs 53:5, 6bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore, I will allot Him a AIs 52:13; Phil 2:9-11portion with the great,
And He will divide the booty with the strong;
Because He poured out 1Lit His soulBMatt 26:38, 39, 42Himself to death,
And was CMark 15:28; Luke 22:37numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself DIs 53:6, 11; 2 Cor 5:21bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.
