Judas’s Remorse
AMark 15:1; Luke 22:66; John 18:28Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; and they bound Him, and led Him away and AMatt 20:19delivered Him to BLuke 3:1; 13:1; 23:12; Acts 3:13; 4:27; 1 Tim 6:13Pilate the governor.
Then when AMatt 26:14Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned BMatt 26:15the thirty 1Or silver shekelspieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? AMatt 27:24See to that yourself!” And he threw the pieces of silver into AMatt 26:61; Luke 1:9, 21the temple sanctuary and departed; and BActs 1:18he went away and hanged himself. The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.” And they conferred together and 1Lit from themwith the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. AActs 1:19For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Jesus before Pilate
11 AMatt 27:11-14: Mark 15:2-5; Luke 23:2, 3; John 18:29-38Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the BMatt 2:2King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, CMatt 26:25It is as you say.” 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, AMatt 26:63; John 19:9He did not answer. 13 Then Pilate *said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” 14 And AMatt 27:12; Mark 15:5; Luke 23:9; John 19:9He did not answer him with regard to even a single 1Lit wordcharge, so the governor was quite amazed.
15 AMatt 27:15-26: Mark 15:6-15; Luke 23:17-25;John 18:39-19:16Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the 1Lit crowdpeople any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 At that time they were holding a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. 17 So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus AMatt 1:16; 27:22who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that because of envy they had handed Him over.
19 AJohn 19:13; Acts 12:21; 18:12, 16f; 25:6, 10, 17While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “Have nothing to do with that BMatt 27:24righteous Man; for 1Lit todaylast night I suffered greatly CGen 20:6; 31:11; Num 12:6; Job 33:15; Matt 1:20; 2:12f, 19, 22in a dream because of Him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to AActs 3:14ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death. 21 But the governor 1Lit answered and said to themsaid to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate *said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus AMatt 1:16who is called Christ?” They all *said, “1Lit Let Him be crucifiedCrucify Him!” 23 And he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept shouting all the more, saying, “1Lit Let Him be crucifiedCrucify Him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that AMatt 26:5a riot was starting, he took water and BDeut 21:6-8washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of CMatt 27:19this Man’s blood; DMatt 27:4see to that yourselves.” 25 And all the people said, “AJosh 2:19; Acts 5:28His blood shall be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released Barabbas 1Or to themfor them; but after having Jesus AMark 15:15; Luke 23:16; John 19:1scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
Jesus Is Mocked
27 AMatt 27:27-31: Mark 15:16-20Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into BMatt 26:3; John 18:28, 33; 19:9the 1I.e. the governor’s official residencePraetorium and gathered the whole Roman 2Or battalionCActs 10:1cohort around Him. 28 They stripped Him and AMark 15:17; John 19:2put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 AMark 15:17; John 19:2And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a 1Or staff; i.e. to mimic a king’s scepterreed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “BMark 15:18; John 19:3Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 AMatt 26:67; Mark 10:34; 14:65; 15:19They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. 31 AMark 15:20After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
32 AMatt 27:32: Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26;John 19:17As they were coming out, they found a man of BActs 2:10; 6:9; 11:20; 13:1Cyrene named Simon, 1Lit this onewhom they pressed into service to bear His cross.
The Crucifixion
33 AMatt 27:34-44: Mark 15:22-32; Luke 23:33-43; John 19:17-24And when they came to a place called BLuke 23:33; John 19:17Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 APs 69:21they gave Him BMark 15:23wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.
35 And when they had crucified Him, APs 22:18they divided up His garments among themselves by casting 1Lit a lotlots. 36 And sitting down, they began to AMatt 27:54keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him 1Lit writtenwhich read, “AMark 15:26; Luke 23:38; John 19:19THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
38 At that time two robbers *were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were 1Or blaspheminghurling abuse at Him, AJob 16:4; Ps 22:7; 109:25; Lam 2:15; Mark 15:29wagging their heads 40 and saying, “AMatt 26:61; John 2:19You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! BMatt 27:42If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 AMark 15:31; Luke 23:35He saved others; 1Or can He not save Himself? He cannot save Himself. BMatt 27:37; Luke 23:37; John 1:49; 12:13He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43  “APs 22:8Hᴇ ᴛʀᴜsᴛs ɪɴ Goᴅ; ʟᴇᴛ Goᴅ ʀᴇscᴜᴇ Him now, ɪꜰ Hᴇ 1Or takes pleasure in; or cares for himᴅᴇʟɪɢʜᴛs ɪɴ Hɪᴍ; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” 44 ALuke 23:39-43The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.

55 AMark 15:40f; Luke 23:49; John 19:25Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while 1Or caring for HimBMark 15:41; Luke 8:2, 3ministering to Him. 56 Among them was AMatt 28:1; Mark 15:40, 47; 16:9; Luke 8:2; John 19:25; 20:1, 18Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and BMatt 20:20the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Jesus Is Buried
57 AMatt 27:57-61: Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled AMatt 27:66; 28:2; Mark 16:4a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 And AMatt 27:56; 28:1Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.
62 Now on the next day, 1Lit which is afterthe day after AMark 15:42; Luke 23:54; John 19:14, 31, 42the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘AMatt 16:21; 17:23; 20:19; Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:34; Luke 9:22; 18:31-33After three days I am to rise again.’ 64  “Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a AMatt 27:66; 28:11guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 And they went and made the grave secure, and along with AMatt 27:65; 28:11the guard they set a BDan 6:17seal on CMatt 27:60; 28:2; Mark 16:4the stone.
