The Visit of the Magi
Now after Jesus was AMic 5:2; Luke 2:4-7born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of BLuke 1:5Herod the king, 1A caste of wise men specializing in astronomy, astrology, and natural sciencemagi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born AJer 23:5; 30:9; Zech 9:9; Matt 27:11; Luke 19:38; 23:38; John 1:49King of the Jews? For we saw BNum 24:17His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the 1Gr Christos (Christ)Messiah was to be born. They said to him, “AJohn 7:42In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written 1Or throughby the prophet:
AMic 5:2; John 7:42Aɴᴅ ʏoᴜ, Bᴇᴛʜʟᴇʜᴇᴍ, ʟᴀɴᴅ oꜰ Jᴜᴅᴀʜ,

Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them 1Lit the time of the appearing starthe exact time ANum 24:17the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.” After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with AMatt 1:18; 12:46Mary His mother; and they 1Lit prostrated; i.e. face down in a prone position to indicate worshipfell to the ground and BMatt 14:33worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been AMatt 2:13, 19, 22; Luke 2:26; Acts 10:22; Heb 8:5; 11:7warned by God BJob 33:15, 16; Matt 1:20in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.
The Flight to Egypt
13 Now when they had gone, behold, an AActs 5:19; 10:7; 12:7-11angel of the Lord *BMatt 2:12, 19appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.”
14 So 1Lit heJoseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. 15 He 1Lit wasremained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “AHos 11:1; Num 24:8Oᴜᴛ oꜰ Eɢʏᴘᴛ I cᴀʟʟᴇᴅ BEx 4:22fMʏ Soɴ.”

19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord *AMatt 1:20; 2:12, 13, 22appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, 20 “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” 21 So 1Lit heJoseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being AMatt 2:12, 13, 19warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee, 23 and came and lived in a city called ALuke 1:26; 2:39; John 1:45, 46Nazareth.
