Miracle at Cana
On AJohn 1:29, 35, 43the third day there was a wedding in BJohn 2:11; 4:46; 21:2Cana of Galilee, and the CMatt 12:46mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His AJohn 1:40-49; 2:12, 17, 22; 3:22; 4:2, 8, 27; 6:8, 12, 16, 22, 24, 60f, 66; 7:3; 8:31disciples were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus *said to her, AJohn 19:26Woman, 1Lit what to Me and to you (a Hebrew idiom)BMatt 8:29what does that have to do with us? CJohn 7:6, 8, 30; 8:20My hour has not yet come.” His AMatt 12:46mother *said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were six stone waterpots set there AMark 7:3f; John 3:25for the Jewish custom of purification, containing 1Lit two or three measurestwenty or thirty gallons each. Jesus *said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. And He *said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the 1Or stewardheadwaiter.” So they took it to him. When the headwaiter tasted the water AJohn 4:46which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, 10 and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people AMatt 24:49; Luke 12:45; Acts 2:15; 1 Cor 11:21; Eph 5:18; 1 Thess 5:7; Rev 17:2, 6have 1Or have become drunkdrunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This beginning of His 1Or attesting miracles; i.e. one which points to the supernatural power of God in redeeming graceAJohn 2:23; 3:2; 4:54; 6:2, 14, 26, 30; 7:31; 9:16; 10:41; 11:47; 12:18, 37; 20:30signs Jesus did in Cana of BJohn 1:43Galilee, and manifested His CJohn 1:14glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
12 After this He went down to AMatt 4:13Capernaum, He and His BMatt 12:46mother and His BMatt 12:46brothers and His CJohn 2:2disciples; and they stayed there a few days.
First Passover—Cleansing the Temple
13 ADeut 16:1-6; John 5:1; 6:4; 11:55The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus BLuke 2:41; John 2:23went up to Jerusalem. 14 AJohn 2:14-16: Matt 21:12ff; Mark 11:15, 17; Luke 19:45f;Mal 3:1ffAnd He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling AMatt 21:12the doves He said, “Take these things away; stop making BLuke 2:49My Father’s house a 1Lit houseplace of business.” 17 His AJohn 2:2disciples remembered that it was written, “BPs 69:9Zᴇᴀʟ ꜰoʀ Yoᴜʀ ʜoᴜsᴇ wɪʟʟ coɴsᴜᴍᴇ ᴍᴇ.” 18 AJohn 1:19The Jews then said to Him, “BMatt 12:38What sign do You show us 1Lit that You do theseas your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, AMatt 26:61; 27:40; Mark 14:58; 15:29; Acts 6:14Destroy this 1Or sanctuarytemple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 AJohn 1:19The Jews then said, “It took BEzra 5:16forty-six years to build this 1Or sanctuarytemple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of A1 Cor 6:19the 1Or sanctuarytemple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His AJohn 2:2disciples BLuke 24:8; John 2:17; 12:16; 14:26remembered that He said this; and they believed CPs 16:10; Luke 24:26f; John 20:9; Acts 13:33the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at AJohn 2:13the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, BJohn 2:11observing His signs which He was doing. 24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for AActs 1:24; 15:8He knew all men, 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, AMatt 9:4; John 1:42, 47; 6:61, 64; 13:11for He Himself knew what was in man.
