Prophecy against Babylon
The word which the Loʀᴅ spoke concerning AGen 10:10; 11:9; 2 Kin 17:24; Is 13:1; 47:1; Dan 1:1; Rev 14:8Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, through Jeremiah the prophet:
AJer 4:16Declare and proclaim among the nations.
Proclaim it and BJer 51:27lift up a standard.
Do not conceal it but say,
CJer 51:31Babylon has been captured,
DIs 46:1Bel has been put to shame, 1Heb MerodachMarduk has been 2Or dismayedshattered;
Her EJer 51:47images have been put to shame, her idols have been shattered.’
 “For a nation has come up against her out of the AIs 13:17; Jer 50:9; 51:11, 27north; it will make her land BIs 14:22, 23; Jer 50:13an object of horror, and there will be CJer 9:10, 11; Zeph 1:3no inhabitant in it. Both man and beast have wandered off, they have gone away!
“In those days and at that time,” declares the Loʀᴅ, “the sons of Israel will come, both they and the sons of Judah AIs 11:12, 13; Jer 3:18; 31:31; 33:7; Hos 1:11as well; they will go along BEzra 3:12, 13; Ps 126:5; Jer 31:9weeping as they go, and it will be CHos 3:5the Loʀᴅ their God they will seek.  “They will AIs 35:8; Jer 6:16ask for the way to Zion, turning their faces 1Lit hitherin its direction; 2M.T. reads come ye!they 3Or will have comewill come that they may join themselves to the Loʀᴅ in an BIs 55:3; Jer 32:40; Heb 8:6-10everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten.

BJer 23:11-14Their shepherds have led them astray.
They have made them turn aside on the CJer 13:16; Ezek 34:6mountains;
They have gone along from mountain to hill
And have forgotten their DJer 33:12; 50:19resting place.
“All who came upon them have devoured them;
And their adversaries have said, ‘AJer 2:3; Zech 11:5We are not guilty,
Inasmuch as they have sinned against the Loʀᴅ who is the BJer 31:23; 40:2, 3habitation of righteousness,
Even the Loʀᴅ, the CPs 22:4; Jer 14:8; 17:13hope of their fathers.’

And they will draw up their battle lines against her;
From there she will be taken captive.

13 “Because of the indignation of the Loʀᴅ she will AJer 34:22not be inhabited,
But she will be BJer 51:26completely desolate;
Everyone who passes by Babylon CJer 18:16; 49:17will be horrified
And will hiss because of all her wounds.
14 “Draw up your battle lines against Babylon on every side,
All you who 1Lit tread (in order to string)bend the bow;
Shoot at her, do not be sparing with your arrows,
For she has AHab 2:8, 17sinned against the Loʀᴅ.

DPs 137:8; Rev 18:6As she has done to others, so do to her.
16 “Cut off the AJoel 1:11sower from Babylon

The first one who devoured him was the C2 Kin 15:19; 17:6; 18:9-13king of Assyria, and this last one who has broken his bones is D2 Kin 24:1, 10-12; 25:1-7Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. 18  “Therefore thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land, just as I AIs 10:12; Ezek 31:3, 11, 12; Nah 3:7, 18, 19punished the king of Assyria. 19  ‘And I will AIs 65:10; Jer 31:10; 33:12; Ezek 34:13bring Israel back to his pasture and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan, and his 1Lit souldesire will be satisfied in the BJer 31:6hill country of Ephraim and Gilead. 20  ‘In those days and at that time,’ declares the Loʀᴅ, ‘search will be made for the iniquity of Israel, but AIs 43:25; Jer 31:34; Mic 7:19there will be none; and for the sins of Judah, but they will not be found; for I will pardon those BIs 1:9whom I leave as a remnant.’

And great destruction.
23 “How the AJer 51:20-24hammer of the whole earth

How Babylon has become
An object of horror among the nations!
24 “I AJer 48:43, 44set a snare for you and you were also BJer 51:31; Dan 5:30, 31caught, O Babylon,
While you yourself were not aware;
You have been found and also seized
Because you have engaged in CJob 9:4; 40:2, 9conflict with the Loʀᴅ.”
25 The Loʀᴅ has opened His armory
And has brought forth the AIs 13:5weapons of His indignation,
For it is a BJer 50:15; 51:12, 25, 55work of the Lord 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ of hosts
In the land of the Chaldeans.

28 There is a AIs 48:20sound of fugitives and refugees from the land of Babylon,
To declare in Zion the BPs 149:6-9; Jer 50:15; 51:10vengeance of the Loʀᴅ our God,

The ostriches also will live in it,
And it will BIs 13:20; Jer 25:12never again be inhabited
