Warning of Jerusalem’s Fall
Thus says the Loʀᴅ, “Go down to the house of the king of Judah, and there speak this word and say, ‘Hear the word of the Loʀᴅ, O king of Judah, who AIs 9:7; Jer 17:25; 22:4, 30; Luke 1:32sits on David’s throne, you and your servants and your people who enter these gates.  ‘Thus says the Loʀᴅ, “AIs 58:6, 7; Jer 7:5, 23; 21:12; Mic 6:8; Zech 7:9; 8:16; Matt 23:23Do justice and righteousness, and deliver the one who has been robbed from the power of his BPs 72:4oppressor. Also CEx 22:21-24do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not DJer 7:6; 19:4; 22:17shed innocent blood in this place.  “For if you men will indeed perform this thing, then AJer 17:25kings will enter the gates of this house, sitting 1Lit for Davidin David’s place on his throne, riding in chariots and on horses, even the king himself and his servants and his people.  “AJer 17:27; 26:4But if you will not obey these words, I BGen 22:16; Amos 6:8; Heb 6:13swear by Myself,” declares the Loʀᴅ, “that this house will become a desolation.” ’ ” For thus says the Loʀᴅ concerning the house of the king of Judah:
“You are like AGen 37:25; Num 32:1; Song 4:1Gilead to Me,
Like the summit of Lebanon;
Yet most assuredly I will make you like a BPs 107:34; Is 6:11; Jer 7:34; Mic 3:12wilderness,
Like cities which are not inhabited.
“For I will set apart AIs 10:3-6; Jer 4:6, 7destroyers against you,
Each with his weapons;
And they will BIs 10:33, 34; 37:24cut down your choicest cedars
And CJer 21:14throw them on the fire.
“Many nations will pass by this city; and they will ADeut 29:24-26; 1 Kin 9:8, 9; 2 Chr 7:20-22; Jer 16:10say to one another, ‘Why has the Loʀᴅ done thus to this great city?’  “Then they will 1Lit sayanswer, ‘Because they A2 Kin 22:17; 2 Chr 34:25; Jer 11:3forsook the covenant of the Loʀᴅ their God and bowed down to other gods and served them.’ ”

10 AEccl 4:2; Is 57:1; Jer 16:7; 22:18Do not weep for the dead or mourn for him,
But weep continually for the one who goes away;
For BJer 25:27; 44:14he will never return
Or see his native land.
11 For thus says the Loʀᴅ in regard to 1I.e. JehoahazA2 Kin 23:30-34; 1 Chr 3:15; 2 Chr 36:1-4Shallum the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who became king in the place of Josiah his father, who went forth from this place, “He will never return there; 12 but in the place where they led him captive, there he will A2 Kin 23:34; Jer 22:18die and not see this land again.

Messages about the Kings
13 “Woe to him who builds his house AJer 17:11; Mic 3:10; Hab 2:9without righteousness
And his 1Or roof chambersupper rooms without justice,
Who uses his neighbor’s services without pay
And BLev 19:13; James 5:4does not give him his wages,
14 Who says, ‘I will AIs 5:8build myself a roomy house
With spacious 1Or roof chambersupper rooms,
And cut out its windows,
2Or PaneledPaneling it with B2 Sam 7:2; Hag 1:4cedar and painting it 3Or vermilionbright red.’
15 “Do you become a king because you are competing in cedar?
Did not your father eat and drink
And A2 Kin 23:25; Jer 7:5; 21:12do justice and righteousness?
Then it was BPs 128:2; Is 3:10; Jer 42:6well with him.
16 “He pled the cause of the APs 72:1-4, 12, 13afflicted and needy;
Then it was well.
B1 Chr 28:9; Jer 9:24Is not that what it means to know Me?”
Declares the Loʀᴅ.
17 “But your eyes and your heart
Are intent only upon your own AJer 6:13; 8:10; Luke 12:15-20dishonest gain,
And on B2 Kin 24:4; Jer 22:3shedding innocent blood
And on practicing oppression and extortion.”
18 Therefore thus says the Loʀᴅ in regard to A2 Kin 23:36-24:6; 2 Chr 36:5Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah,
“They will not BJer 22:10; 34:5lament for him:
C1 Kin 13:30Alas, my brother!’ or, ‘Alas, sister!’
They will not lament for him:
‘Alas for the master!’ or, ‘Alas for his splendor!’
19 “He will be A1 Kin 21:23, 24; Jer 36:30buried with a donkey’s burial,
Dragged off and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
20 “Go up to Lebanon and cry out,
And lift up your voice in Bashan;
Cry out also from ANum 27:12; Deut 32:49Abarim,
For all your BJer 2:25; 3:1lovers have been crushed.
21 “I spoke to you in your prosperity;
But AJer 13:10; 19:15you said, ‘I will not listen!’
BJer 3:25This has been your practice CJer 3:24; 32:30from your youth,
That you have not obeyed My voice.
22 “The wind will sweep away all your AJer 23:1shepherds,
And your BJer 30:14lovers will go into captivity;
Then you will surely be CIs 65:13; Jer 20:11ashamed and humiliated
Because of all your wickedness.
23 “You who dwell in Lebanon,
Nested in the cedars,
How you will groan when pangs come upon you,
AJer 4:31; 6:24Pain like a woman in childbirth!
24 “As I live,” declares the Loʀᴅ, “even though 1I.e. JehoiachinA2 Kin 24:6; 1 Chr 3:16; 2 Chr 36:9; Jer 37:1Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were a BSong 8:6; Is 49:16; Hag 2:23signet ring on My right hand, yet I would pull 1I.e. Jehoiachinyou 2Lit off from thereoff; 25 and I will A2 Kin 24:15, 16; Jer 21:7; 34:20, 21give you over into the hand of those who are seeking your life, yes, into the hand of those whom you dread, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of the Chaldeans. 26  “I will A2 Kin 24:15; Jer 10:18; 16:13hurl you and your B2 Kin 24:8mother who bore you into another country where you were not born, and there you will die. 27  “But as for the land to which they desire to return, they will not return to it.
28 “Is this man Coniah a despised, shattered jar?
Or is he an APs 31:12; Jer 48:38; Hos 8:8undesirable vessel?
Why have he and his descendants been BJer 15:1hurled out
And cast into a CJer 17:4land that they had not known?
29 ADeut 4:26; Jer 6:19; Mic 1:2O land, land, land,
Hear the word of the Loʀᴅ!
30 “Thus says the Loʀᴅ,
‘Write this man down A1 Chr 3:17; Matt 1:12childless,
A man who will BJer 2:37; 10:21not prosper in his days;
For no man of his CPs 94:20; Jer 36:30descendants will prosper
Sitting on the throne of David
Or ruling again in Judah.’ ”
