The Polluted Land
And she goes from him
And belongs to another man,
Will he still return to her?
Will not that land be completely 2Or alienatedpolluted?
Yet you CJer 4:1; Zech 1:3turn to Me,” declares the Loʀᴅ.
2 “Lift up your eyes to the ADeut 12:2; Jer 2:20; 3:21; 7:29bare heights and see;
Where have you not been violated?
By the roads you have BGen 38:14; Ezek 16:25sat for them
Like an Arab in the desert,
And you have CJer 2:7polluted a land
With your harlotry and with your wickedness.
3 “Therefore the ALev 26:19; Jer 14:3-6showers have been withheld,
And there has been no spring rain.
Yet you had a BJer 6:15; 8:12harlot’s forehead;
You refused to be ashamed.
4 “Have you not just now called to Me,
‘AJer 3:19; 31:9My Father, You are the 1Lit leaderBPs 71:17; Prov 2:17friend of my CJer 2:2; Hos 2:15youth?
5 ‘APs 103:9; Is 57:16; Jer 3:12Will He be angry forever?
Will He 1Lit keep itbe indignant to the end?’
Behold, you have spoken
And have done evil things,
And you have 2Lit been ablehad your way.”
Faithless Israel
6 Then the Loʀᴅ said to me in the days of Josiah the king, “Have you seen what faithless Israel did? She AJer 17:2; Ezek 23:4-10went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and she was a harlot there. 7 “A2 Kin 17:13I 1Lit saidthought, ‘After she has done all these things she will return to Me’; but she did not return, and her BJer 3:11; Ezek 16:47treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8 “And I saw that for all the adulteries of faithless Israel, I had sent her away and ADeut 24:1, 3; Is 50:1given her a writ of divorce, yet her BEzek 16:46, 47; 23:11treacherous sister Judah did not fear; but she went and was a harlot also. 9 “Because of the lightness of her harlotry, she AJer 2:7; 3:2polluted the land and committed adultery with BIs 57:6; Jer 2:27; 10:8stones and trees. 10 “Yet in spite of all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but rather in AJer 12:2; Hos 7:14deception,” declares the Loʀᴅ.
God Invites Repentance
11 And the Loʀᴅ said to me, “AEzek 16:51, 52; 23:11Faithless Israel has proved herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. 12 “Go and proclaim these words toward the north and say,
‘AJer 3:14, 22; Ezek 33:11Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Loʀᴅ;
‘BJer 3:5I will not 1Lit cause My countenance to falllook upon you in anger.
For I am CPs 86:15; Jer 12:15; 31:20; 33:26gracious,’ declares the Loʀᴅ;
‘I will not be angry forever.
That you have transgressed against the Loʀᴅ your God
And have BJer 2:20, 25; 3:2, 6scattered your 2Lit waysfavors to the strangers CDeut 12:2under every green tree,
And you have not obeyed My voice,’ declares the Loʀᴅ.
14 ‘Return, O faithless sons,’ declares the Loʀᴅ;
‘For I am a AJer 31:32; Hos 2:19master to you,
And I will take you one from a city and two from a family,
And BJer 31:6, 12I will bring you to Zion.’
15 “Then I will give you AJer 23:4; 31:10; Ezek 34:23; Eph 4:11shepherds after My own heart, who will BActs 20:28feed you on knowledge and understanding. 16 “It shall be in those days when you are multiplied and increased in the land,” declares the Loʀᴅ, “they will AIs 65:17no longer say, ‘The ark of the covenant of the Loʀᴅ.’ And it will not come to mind, nor will they remember it, nor will they miss it, nor will it be made again. 17 “At that time they will call Jerusalem ‘The AJer 17:12; Ezek 43:7Throne of the Loʀᴅ,’ and BJer 3:19; 4:2; 12:15, 16; 16:19all the nations will be gathered to it, to Jerusalem, for the CIs 60:9name of the Loʀᴅ; nor will they DJer 11:8walk anymore after the stubbornness of their evil heart. 18 “AIs 11:13; Jer 50:4, 5; Hos 1:11In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel, and they will come together BJer 16:15; 31:8from the land of the north to the CAmos 9:15land that I gave your fathers as an inheritance.
19 “Then I said,
‘How I would set you among 1Lit theMy sons
And give you a pleasant land,
The most APs 16:6beautiful inheritance of the nations!’
And I said, ‘You shall call Me, BIs 63:16; Jer 3:4My Father,
And not turn away from following Me.’
20 “Surely, as a woman treacherously departs from her 1Or companionlover,
So you have AIs 48:8dealt treacherously with Me,
O house of Israel,” declares the Loʀᴅ.
21 A voice is heard on the AIs 15:2; Jer 3:2; 7:29bare heights,
The weeping and the supplications of the sons of Israel;
Because they have perverted their way,
They have BIs 17:10; Jer 2:32; 13:25forgotten the Loʀᴅ their God.
22 “Return, O faithless sons,
AJer 30:17; 33:6; Hos 6:1; 14:4I will heal your faithlessness.”
“Behold, we come to You;
For You are the Loʀᴅ our God.
23 “Surely, AJer 17:2the hills are a deception,
A tumult on the mountains.
Surely in the BPs 3:8; Jer 17:14; 31:7Loʀᴅ our God
Is the salvation of Israel.
24 “But AHos 9:10the shameful thing has consumed the labor of our fathers since our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. 25 “Let us lie down in our AEzra 9:6, 7shame, and let our humiliation cover us; for we have sinned against the Loʀᴅ our God, we and our fathers, BJer 22:21from our youth even to this day. And we have not obeyed the voice of the Loʀᴅ our God.”
