Destruction of Jerusalem Impending
1 “Flee for safety, O sons of AJosh 18:28Benjamin,
From the midst of Jerusalem!
Now blow a trumpet in Tekoa
And raise a signal over 1I.e. house of the vineyardBNeh 3:14Beth-haccerem;
For evil looks down from the CJer 1:14; 4:6; 6:22north,
And a great destruction.
3 “AJer 12:10Shepherds and their flocks will come to her,

They will pasture each in his 2Lit handplace.
Arise, and let us 2Lit go upattack at BJer 15:8; Zeph 2:4noon.
Woe to us, for the day declines,
For the shadows of the evening lengthen!
5 “Arise, and let us 1Lit go upattack by night

For thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts,
“ADeut 20:19, 20Cut down her trees
And cast up a BJer 32:24; 33:4siege against Jerusalem.
This is the city to be punished,
In whose midst there is only CJer 22:17oppression.
So she 1Lit keeps coldkeeps fresh her wickedness.
BJer 20:8; Ezek 7:11, 23Violence and destruction are heard in her;
CJer 30:12, 13Sickness and wounds are ever before Me.
8 “AJer 7:28; 17:23Be warned, O Jerusalem,
Or 1Lit my soulBEzek 23:18; Hos 9:12I shall be alienated from you,
And make you a desolation,
A land not inhabited.”
9 Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts,
“They will AJer 16:16; 49:9; Obad 5, 6thoroughly glean as the vine the BJer 8:3; 11:23remnant of Israel;
Pass your hand again like a grape gatherer
Over the branches.”
10 To whom shall I speak and give warning
That they may hear?
Behold, their AJer 5:21; 7:26; Acts 7:51ears are 1Lit uncircumcisedclosed
And they cannot listen.
Behold, BJer 20:8the word of the Loʀᴅ has become a reproach to them;
They have no delight in it.
11 But I am AJob 32:18, 19; Mic 3:8full of the wrath of the Loʀᴅ;
I am BJer 15:6; 20:9weary with holding it in.
“CJer 7:20; 9:21Pour it out on the children in the street

For both husband and wife shall be taken,

Their fields and their wives together;
For I will BJer 15:6stretch out My hand
Against the inhabitants of the land,” declares the Loʀᴅ.
13 “For AJer 8:10from the least of them even to the greatest of them,
Everyone is BIs 56:11; 57:17; Jer 8:10; 22:17greedy for gain,
And from the prophet even to the priest

14 “They have AJer 8:11; Ezek 13:10healed the brokenness of My people superficially,
Saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
But there is no peace.
15 “Were they AJer 3:3; 8:12ashamed because of the abomination they have done?
They were not even ashamed at all;
They did not even know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
At the time that I punish them,
They shall be cast down,” says the Loʀᴅ.
16 Thus says the Loʀᴅ,
“Stand by the ways and see and ask for the AIs 8:20; Jer 12:16; 18:15; 31:21; Mal 4:4; Luke 16:29ancient paths,
Where the good way is, and walk in it;
And BMatt 11:29you will find rest for your souls.
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’
But they said, ‘We will not listen.’
18 “Therefore hear, O nations,
And know, O congregation, what is among them.
19 “AIs 1:2; Jer 19:3, 15; 22:29Hear, O earth: behold, I am bringing disaster on this people,
The BProv 1:31fruit of their 1Or devicesplans,
Because they have not listened to My words,
And as for My law, they have CJer 8:9rejected it also.

And your sacrifices are not pleasing to Me.”

Therefore, thus says the Loʀᴅ,
“Behold, AIs 8:14; Jer 13:16I am 1Lit givinglaying stumbling blocks before this people.
And they will stumble against them,
BIs 9:14-17; Jer 9:21, 22Fathers and sons together;
Neighbor and 2Lit his friendfriend will perish.”
The Enemy from the North
22 Thus says the Loʀᴅ,
“Behold, AJer 1:15; 10:22; 50:41-43a people is coming from the north land,
And a great nation will be aroused from the BNeh 1:9remote parts of the earth.
23 “They seize AIs 13:18; Jer 4:29bow and spear;
They are BJer 50:42cruel and have no mercy;
Their voice CIs 5:30roars like the sea,
And they ride on horses,
Arrayed as a man for the battle
Against you, O daughter of Zion!”
24 We have AIs 28:19; Jer 4:19-21heard the report of it;
Our hands are limp.
BIs 21:3; Jer 4:31; 13:21; 30:6; 49:24; 50:43Anguish has seized us,
Pain as of a woman in childbirth.
25 AJer 14:18Do not go out into the field

For the enemy has a sword,

26 O daughter of my people, AJer 4:8put on sackcloth

A lamentation most bitter.
For suddenly the destroyer
Will come upon us.
That you may know and assay their way.”
28 All of them are stubbornly rebellious,

29 The bellows blow fiercely,
The lead is consumed by the fire;
In vain the refining goes on,
