PROVERBS
1
The Usefulness of Proverbs
The A1 Kin 4:32; Prov 10:1; 25:1; Eccl 12:9proverbs of Solomon BEccl 1:1the son of David, king of Israel:
To know AProv 15:33wisdom and instruction,
To discern the sayings of BProv 4:1understanding,
To AProv 2:1; 19:20receive instruction in wise behavior,
BProv 2:9Righteousness, justice and equity;
To give AProv 8:5, 12prudence to the 1Lit simple onesnaive,
To the youth BProv 2:10, 11; 3:21knowledge and discretion,
A wise man will hear and AProv 9:9increase in learning,
And a BProv 14:6; Eccl 9:11man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and a figure,
The words of the wise and their ANum 12:8; Ps 49:4; 78:2; Dan 8:23riddles.

AJob 28:28; Ps 111:10; Prov 9:10; 15:33; Eccl 12:13The fear of the Loʀᴅ is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The Enticement of Sinners
AProv 4:1Hear, my son, your father’s instruction
And BProv 6:20do not forsake your mother’s teaching;
Indeed, they are a AProv 4:9graceful wreath to your head
And 1Lit necklacesBGen 41:42; Dan 5:29ornaments about your neck.
10 My son, if sinners AProv 16:29entice you,
BGen 39:7-10; Deut 13:8; Ps 50:18; Eph 5:11Do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us,
Let us AProv 12:6; Jer 5:26lie in wait for blood,
Let us BPs 10:8; Prov 1:18ambush the innocent without cause;
12 Let us APs 124:3swallow them alive like Sheol,
Even whole, as those who BPs 28:1go down to the pit;
13 We will find all kinds of precious wealth,
We will fill our houses with spoil;
14 Throw in your lot 1Lit in the midst of uswith us,
We shall all have one purse,”
15 My son, APs 1:1; Prov 4:14do not walk in the way with them.
BPs 119:101Keep your feet from their path,
16 For AProv 6:17, 18; Is 59:7their feet run to evil
And they hasten to shed blood.
17 Indeed, it is 1Lit in vainuseless to spread the baited net
In the sight of any 2Lit possessor of wingbird;
18 But they AProv 11:19lie in wait for their own blood;
They ambush their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who AProv 15:27gains by violence;
It takes away the life of its possessors.

Wisdom Warns
20 AProv 8:1-3; 9:3Wisdom shouts in the street,
She 1Lit giveslifts her voice in the square;
21 At the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
At the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:
22 “How long, O 1Lit simple onesAProv 1:4, 32; 8:5; 9:4; 22:3naive ones, will you love 2Or naivetebeing simple-minded?
And BPs 1:1scoffers delight themselves in scoffing
And fools CProv 1:29; 5:12hate knowledge?
23 “Turn to my reproof,
Behold, I will AIs 32:15; Joel 2:28; John 7:39pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 “Because AIs 65:12; 66:4; Jer 7:13I called and you BZech 7:11refused,
I CIs 65:2; Rom 10:21stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;
25 And you APs 107:11; Luke 7:30neglected all my counsel
And did not BProv 15:10want my reproof;
26 I will also APs 2:4laugh at your BProv 6:15calamity;
I will mock when your CProv 10:24dread comes,
27 When your dread comes like a storm
And your calamity comes like a AProv 10:25whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.
28 “Then they will A1 Sam 8:18; Job 27:9; 35:12; Ps 18:41; Is 1:15; Jer 11:11; 14:12; Ezek 8:18; Mic 3:4; Zech 7:13; James 4:3call on me, but I will not answer;
They will BProv 8:17seek me diligently but they will not find me,
29 Because they AJob 21:14; Prov 1:22hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of the Loʀᴅ.
30 “They APs 81:11; Prov 1:25would not accept my counsel,
They spurned all my reproof.
31 “So they shall AJob 4:8; Prov 5:22, 23; 22:8; Is 3:11; Jer 6:19eat of the fruit of their own way
And be BProv 14:14satiated with their own devices.
32 “For the AJer 2:19waywardness of the 1Lit simple onesnaive will kill them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
33 “But APs 25:12, 13; Prov 3:24-26he who listens to me shall 1Lit dwelllive securely
And will be at ease from the dread of evil.”
