1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him 1Lit from the hand offrom the AGen 37:25, 28, 36; Ps 105:17Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there. 2 AGen 39:3, 21, 23; Acts 7:9The Loʀᴅ was with Joseph, so he became a 1Or prosperoussuccessful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. 3 Now his master AGen 21:22; 26:28saw that the Loʀᴅ was with him and how the Loʀᴅ BPs 1:3caused all that he did to prosper in his hand. 4 So Joseph AGen 18:3; 19:19found favor in his sight and 1Or ministered to himbecame his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and BGen 24:2; 39:8, 22all that he owned he put in his 2Lit handcharge. 5 It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the Loʀᴅ AGen 30:27blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; thus BDeut 28:3, 4, 11the Loʀᴅ’s blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field. 6 So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s 1Lit handcharge; and with him there he did not 2Lit knowconcern himself with anything except the 3Lit breadfood which he 4Or used to eatate.

Now Joseph was AGen 29:17; 1 Sam 16:12handsome in form and appearance. 7 It came about after these events AProv 7:15-20that his master’s wife 1Lit lifted up her eyes atlooked with desire at Joseph, and she said, “B2 Sam 13:11Lie with me.” 8 But AProv 6:23, 24he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master 1Lit does not know what is in the housedoes not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my 2Lit handcharge. 9  “1Or He is not greaterAGen 41:40There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and BGen 20:6; 42:18; 2 Sam 12:13; Ps 51:4sin against God?” 10 As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her. 11 Now it happened 1Lit about this dayone day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside. 12 She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside. 13 1Lit And it came about whenWhen she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside, 14 she called to the men of her household and said to them, “See, he has brought in a 1Lit Hebrew manHebrew to us to make sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I 2Lit called with a great voicescreamed. 15  “When he heard that I raised my voice and 1Lit called outscreamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside.” 16 So she 1Lit let...lie besideleft his garment beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she AEx 23:1; Prov 26:28spoke to him 1Lit according towith these words, “2Lit saying, “TheThe Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make sport of me; 18 and as I raised my voice and 1Lit called outscreamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”

19 Now when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “1Lit According to these things your slaveThis is what your slave did to me,” AProv 6:34his anger burned. 20 So Joseph’s master took him and AGen 40:3; Ps 105:18put him into the jail, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in the jail. 21 But AGen 39:2; Ps 105:19; Acts 7:9the Loʀᴅ was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and BEx 3:21; 11:3; 12:36gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer. 22 The chief jailer AGen 39:4; 40:3, 4committed to Joseph’s 1Lit handcharge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was 2Lit the doerresponsible for it. 23 AGen 39:3, 8The chief jailer did not supervise anything under 1Lit his handJoseph’s charge because BGen 39:2, 3the Loʀᴅ was with him; and whatever he did, CGen 39:3the Loʀᴅ made to prosper.
