God’s Indictment of His People
1 Hear now what the Loʀᴅ is saying,
“Arise, plead your case 1Lit withbefore the mountains,
And let the hills hear your voice.
2 “Listen, you mountains, to the indictment of the Loʀᴅ,
And you enduring A2 Sam 22:16; Ps 104:5foundations of the earth,
Because the BIs 1:18; Hos 4:1; 12:2Loʀᴅ has a case against His people;
Even with Israel He will dispute.
And CIs 43:22, 23how have I wearied you? Answer Me.
4 “Indeed, I AEx 12:51; 20:2brought you up from the land of Egypt
And BDeut 7:8ransomed you from the house of slavery,
And I sent before you CEx 4:10-16; Ps 77:20Moses, Aaron and DEx 15:20Miriam.
5 “My people, remember now
What ANum 22:5, 6Balak king of Moab counseled
And what Balaam son of Beor answered him,

What God Requires of Man
6 APs 40:6-8With what shall I come to the Loʀᴅ
And bow myself before the God on high?
Shall I come to Him with BPs 51:16, 17burnt offerings,
With yearling calves?
7 Does the Loʀᴅ take delight in APs 50:9; Is 1:1; 40:16thousands of rams,
In ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I present my BLev 18:21; 20:1-5; 2 Kin 16:3; Jer 7:31firstborn for my rebellious acts,
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8 He has ADeut 30:15told you, O man, what is good;
And BDeut 10:12what does the Loʀᴅ require of you

9 The voice of the Loʀᴅ will call to the city—
And it is sound wisdom to fear Your name:
“Hear, O tribe. Who has appointed 1Lit itits time?
10 “Is there yet a man in the wicked house,

And a bag of deceptive weights?

Her residents speak BJer 9:2-6, 8; Hos 7:13; Amos 2:4lies,
And their CIs 3:8tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

14 “You will eat, but you will AIs 9:20not be satisfied,

You will try to remove for safekeeping,

And what you do preserve I will give to the sword.

You will tread the olive but will not anoint yourself with oil;
