A Satire on Idolatry
1 Hear the word which the Loʀᴅ speaks to you, O house of Israel. 2 Thus says the Loʀᴅ,
“ALev 18:3; 20:23; Deut 12:30Do not learn the way of the nations,
And do not be terrified by the signs of the heavens
Although the nations are terrified by them;
Because BIs 44:9-20it is wood cut from the forest,
The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool.
They BIs 40:20; 41:7fasten it with nails and with hammers
So that it will not totter.
5 “Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field are they,
And they APs 115:5; Is 46:7; Jer 10:14; 1 Cor 12:2cannot speak;
They must be BPs 115:7; Is 46:1, 7carried,
Because they cannot walk!
Do not fear them,
For they CIs 41:23, 24can do no harm,
Nor can they do any good.”
6 AEx 15:11; Deut 33:26; Ps 86:8, 10; Jer 10:16There is none like You, O Loʀᴅ;
You are BPs 48:1; 96:4; Is 12:6; Jer 32:18great, and great is Your name in might.
Indeed it is Your due!
For among all the CDan 2:27, 28; 1 Cor 1:19, 20wise men of the nations
And in all their kingdoms,
There is none like You.
8 But they are altogether AJer 4:22; 5:4; 10:14stupid and foolish
And CDan 10:5gold from Uphaz,
The work of a craftsman and of the hands of a goldsmith;
Violet and purple are their clothing;
They are all the DPs 115:4work of skilled men.
10 But the Loʀᴅ is the AIs 65:16true God;
He is the BJer 4:2living God and the CPs 10:16; 29:10everlasting King.
At His wrath the DJer 4:24; 50:46earth quakes,
And the nations cannot EPs 76:7endure His indignation.
11 1This verse is in AramThus you shall say to them, “The APs 96:5gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will BIs 2:18; Zeph 2:11perish from the earth and from under the 2Or these heavensheavens.”
12 It is AGen 1:1, 6; Job 38:4-7; Ps 136:5; 148:4, 5; Jer 51:15, 19He who made the earth by His power,
Who BPs 78:69; Is 45:18established the world by His wisdom;
And by His understanding He has CJob 9:8; Is 40:22stretched out the heavens.
And He causes the BJob 36:27-29clouds to ascend from the end of the earth;
He makes lightning for the rain,
And brings out the CPs 135:7wind from His storehouses.
14 Every man is AJer 10:8; 51:17, 18stupid, devoid of knowledge;
Every goldsmith is put to shame by his 1Or graven imageidols;
For his molten images are deceitful,
And there is no breath in them.
15 They are AIs 41:24; Jer 8:19; 14:22worthless, a work of mockery;
In the BJer 8:12; 51:18time of their punishment they will perish.
16 The APs 16:5; 73:26; 119:57; Jer 51:19; Lam 3:24portion of Jacob is not like these;
For the 1Lit FashionerBIs 45:7; Jer 10:12Maker of all is He,
And CDeut 32:9; Ps 74:2Israel is the tribe of His inheritance;

17 AEzek 12:3-12Pick up your bundle from the ground,
You who dwell under siege!

For thus says the Loʀᴅ,
“Behold, I am A1 Sam 25:29slinging out the inhabitants of the land
At this time,
And will cause them distress,
That they may 1Lit findbe found.”
My BJer 14:17wound is incurable.
But I said, “Truly this is a sickness,
And I CMic 7:9must bear it.”
20 My AJer 4:20; Lam 2:4tent is destroyed,
And all my ropes are broken;
My BJer 31:15; Lam 1:5sons have gone from me and are no more.
There is CIs 51:18no one to stretch out my tent again
Or to set up my curtains.
21 For the shepherds have become stupid
And AJer 2:8have not sought the Loʀᴅ;
Therefore they have not prospered,
And BJer 23:2all their flock is scattered.
22 The sound of a AJer 4:15report! Behold, it comes—
A great commotion BJer 1:14; 25:9out of the land of the north—
To CJer 9:11; 49:33make the cities of Judah
A desolation, a haunt of jackals.
23 I know, O Loʀᴅ, that AProv 16:1; 20:24a man’s way is not in himself,
BIs 26:7Nor is it in a man who walks to direct his steps.
24 APs 6:1; 38:1Correct me, O Loʀᴅ, but with justice;
Not with Your anger, or You will 1Lit diminish mebring me to nothing.

And have laid waste his 1Or pasturehabitation.
