BOOK 3

The End of the Wicked Contrasted with That of the Righteous.
A Psalm of Asaph.
Surely God is APs 86:5good to Israel,
To those who are BPs 24:4; 51:10; Matt 5:8pure in heart!
But as for me, APs 94:18my feet came close to stumbling,
My steps 1Lit were caused to sliphad almost slipped.
For I was APs 37:1; Prov 23:17envious of the 1Or boastersarrogant
As I saw the BJob 21:7; Ps 37:7; Jer 12:1prosperity of the wicked.
For there are no pains in their death,
And their 1Or bellybody is fat.
They are AJob 21:9; Ps 73:12not 1Lit in the trouble of menin trouble as other 2Or mortalsmen,
Nor are they BPs 73:14plagued 3Lit withlike mankind.
Therefore pride is AGen 41:42; Prov 1:9their necklace;
The BPs 109:18garment of violence covers them.
Their eye 1Lit goes forthbulges from AJob 15:27; Ps 17:10; Jer 5:28fatness;
The imaginations of their heart 2Lit overflowrun riot.
They APs 1:1mock and 1Or they speak in wickedness; From on high they speak of oppressionwickedly speak of oppression;
They BPs 17:10; 2 Pet 2:18; Jude 16speak from on high.
They have ARev 13:6set their mouth 1Or inagainst the heavens,
And their tongue 2Lit walksparades through the earth.

10 Therefore 1Or Hishis people return to this place,
And waters of APs 23:5abundance are 2Lit drained outdrunk by them.
11 They say, “AJob 22:13How does God know?
And is there knowledge 1Lit inwith the Most High?”
12 Behold, APs 49:6; 52:7these are the wicked;
And always BJer 49:31; Ezek 23:42at ease, they have increased in wealth.
13 Surely AJob 21:15; 34:9; 35:3in vain I have 1Or cleansed my heartkept my heart pure
And BPs 26:6washed my hands in innocence;
14 For I have been stricken APs 38:6all day long
And 1Lit my chasteningBJob 33:19; Ps 118:18chastened every morning.

15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,”
Behold, I would have betrayed the APs 14:5generation of Your children.
16 When I AEccl 8:17pondered to understand this,
It was 1Lit labor, troubletroublesome in my sight
17 Until I came into the 1Lit sanctuariesAPs 27:4; 77:13sanctuary of God;
Then I perceived their BPs 37:38end.
18 Surely You set them in APs 35:6slippery places;
You cast them down to 1Lit ruinsBPs 35:8; 36:12destruction.
19 How they are 1Lit become a desolationANum 16:21; Is 47:11destroyed in a moment!
They are utterly swept away by BJob 18:11sudden terrors!
20 Like a AJob 20:8dream when one awakes,
O Lord, when BPs 78:65aroused, You will C1 Sam 2:30despise their 1Or imageform.

21 When my AJudg 10:16heart was embittered
And I was BActs 2:37pierced 1Lit in my kidneyswithin,
22 Then I was APs 49:10; 92:6senseless and ignorant;
I was like 1Or an animala BJob 18:3; Ps 49:20; Eccl 3:18beast 2Lit with Youbefore You.
23 Nevertheless APs 16:8I am continually with You;
You have taken hold of my right hand.
24 With Your counsel You will APs 32:8; 48:14; Is 58:11guide me,
And afterward BGen 5:24; Ps 49:15receive me 1Or with honorto glory.

25 APs 16:2; Phil 3:8Whom have I in heaven but You?
And 1Or withbesides You, I desire nothing on earth.
26 My APs 38:10; 40:12; 84:2; 119:81flesh and my heart may fail,
But God is the 1Lit rockstrength of my heart and my BPs 16:5portion forever.
27 For, behold, APs 119:155those who are far from You will BPs 37:20perish;
You have 1Or silenceddestroyed all those who 2Lit go to a whoring fromCEx 34:15; Num 15:39; Ps 106:39; Hos 4:12; 9:1are unfaithful to You.
28 But as for me, APs 65:4; Heb 10:22; James 4:8the nearness of God is my good;
I have made the Lord 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ my BPs 14:6; 71:7refuge,
