Eliphaz Says Job Presumes Much
Then Eliphaz the Temanite 1Lit answered and saidresponded,
“Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge
AJob 6:26And fill 1Lit his bellyhimself with the east wind?
“Should he argue with useless talk,
Or with words which are not profitable?
“Indeed, you do away with 1Lit fearreverence
And hinder meditation before God.
“For AJob 22:5your guilt teaches your mouth,
And you choose the language of BJob 5:12, 13the crafty.
“Your AJob 18:7own mouth condemns you, and not I;
And your own lips testify against you.

“Were you the first man to be born,
Or AJob 38:4, 21; Prov 8:25were you brought forth before the hills?
“Do you hear the AJob 29:4; Rom 11:34; 1 Cor 2:11secret counsel of God,
And limit wisdom to yourself?
AJob 12:3; 13:2What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that 1Lit is not within us?we do not?
10 “Both the AJob 12:12; 32:6, 7gray-haired and the aged are among us,
Older than your father.
11 “Are AJob 5:17-19; 36:15, 16the consolations of God too small for you,
Even the BJob 6:10; 23:12word spoken gently with you?
12 “Why does your AJob 11:13; 36:13heart carry you away?
And why do your eyes flash,
13 That you should turn your spirit against God
And allow such words to go out of your mouth?
14 “What is man, that AJob 14:4; Prov 20:9; Eccl 7:20he should be pure,
Or BJob 25:4he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 “Behold, He puts no trust in His AJob 5:1holy ones,
And the BJob 25:5heavens are not pure in His sight;
16 How much less one who is APs 14:1detestable and corrupt,
Man, who BJob 34:7; Prov 19:28drinks iniquity like water!

What Eliphaz Has Seen of Life
17 “I will tell you, listen to me;
And what I have seen I will also declare;
18 What wise men have told,
And have not concealed from AJob 8:8; 20:4their fathers,
19 To whom alone the land was given,
And no alien passed among them.
20 “The wicked man writhes AJob 15:24in pain all his days,
And 1Lit the number of years arenumbered are the years BJob 24:1; 27:13stored up for the ruthless.
21 1Lit A sound of terrors isSounds of AJob 15:24; 18:11; 20:25; 24:17; 27:20terror are in his ears;
BJob 20:21; 1 Thess 5:3While at peace the destroyer comes upon him.
22 “He does not believe that he will AJob 15:30return from darkness,
And he is destined for BJob 19:29; 27:14; 33:18; 36:12the sword.
23 “He wanders about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows that a day of AJob 15:22, 30darkness is 1Lit ready at his handat hand.
24 “Distress and anguish terrify him,
They overpower him like a king ready for the attack,
25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God
And conducts himself AJob 36:9arrogantly against 1Heb Shaddaithe Almighty.
26 “He rushes 1Lit with a stiff neckheadlong at Him
With 2Lit the thick-bossed shieldshis massive shield.
27 “For he has APs 73:7; 119:70covered his face with his fat
And made his thighs heavy with flesh.
28 “He has AJob 3:14; Is 5:8, 9lived in desolate cities,
In houses no one would inhabit,
Which are destined to become 1Or heapsruins.
29 “He AJob 27:16, 17will not become rich, nor will his wealth endure;
And his grain will not bend down to the ground.
30 “He will AJob 5:14; 15:22not 1Lit turn asideescape from darkness;
The BJob 15:34; 20:26; 22:20; 31:12flame will wither his shoots,
And by CJob 4:9the breath of His mouth he will go away.
31 “Let him not AJob 35:13; Is 59:4trust in emptiness, deceiving himself;
For emptiness will be his 1Lit exchangereward.
32 “It will be accomplished AJob 22:16; Eccl 7:17before his time,
And his palm BJob 18:16branch will not be green.
33 “He will drop off his unripe grape like the vine,
And will AJob 14:2cast off his flower like the olive tree.
34 “For the company of AJob 8:13the godless is barren,
And fire consumes BJob 8:22the tents of 1Lit a bribethe corrupt.
35 “They APs 7:14; Is 59:4conceive 1Or painmischief and bring forth iniquity,
And their 2Lit bellymind prepares deception.”
