Prayer for Rescue from Enemies.
A Psalm of David.
1 Contend, O Loʀᴅ, with those who APs 18:43; Is 49:25contend with me;
Fight against those who BPs 56:2fight against me.
And rise up for BPs 44:26my help.
3 Draw also the spear and 1Or close up the path against thosethe battle-axe to meet those who pursue me;
Say to my soul, “I am APs 62:2your salvation.”
Let those be BPs 40:14; 129:5turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me.
5 Let them be AJob 21:18; Ps 83:13; Is 29:5like chaff before the wind,
With the angel of the Loʀᴅ driving them on.
6 Let their way be dark and APs 73:18; Jer 23:12slippery,
With the angel of the Loʀᴅ pursuing them.
Without cause they dug a 1Pit has been transposed from line abovepit for my soul.
8 Let APs 55:23; Is 47:11; 1 Thess 5:3destruction come upon him unawares,
And BPs 9:15let the net which he hid catch himself;
Into that very CPs 73:18destruction let him fall.
9 And my soul shall AIs 61:10rejoice in the Loʀᴅ;
It shall BPs 9:14; 13:5; Luke 1:47exult in His salvation.
Who delivers the afflicted from him CPs 18:17who is too strong for him,
And DPs 37:14; 109:16the afflicted and the needy from him who robs him?”
11 APs 27:12Malicious witnesses rise up;
They ask me of things that I do not know.
12 They APs 38:20; 109:5; Jer 18:20; John 10:32repay me evil for good,
To the bereavement of my soul.
I CPs 69:10humbled my soul with fasting,
And my DMatt 10:13; Luke 10:6prayer kept returning to my bosom.
14 I went about as though it were my friend or brother;
I APs 38:6bowed down 1Or dressed in blackmourning, as one who sorrows for a mother.
The 2Or smitten onesBJob 30:1, 8, 12smiters whom I did not know gathered together against me,
16 Like godless jesters at a feast,
They AJob 16:9; Ps 37:12; Lam 2:16gnashed at me with their teeth.
17 Lord, APs 13:1; Hab 1:13how long will You look on?
Rescue my soul BPs 35:7from their ravages,
My CPs 22:20, 21only life from the lions.
18 I will APs 22:22give You thanks in the great congregation;
I will BPs 22:25praise You among a mighty throng.
19 APs 13:4; 30:1; 38:16Do not let those who are wrongfully BPs 38:19; 69:4my enemies rejoice over me;
Nor let those CJohn 15:25who hate me without cause 1Or wink the eyeDProv 6:13; 10:10wink maliciously.
20 For they do not speak peace,
But they devise APs 55:21; Jer 9:8; Mic 6:12deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.
21 They AJob 16:10; Ps 22:13opened their mouth wide against me;
They said, “BPs 40:15; 70:3Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it!”
O Lord, CPs 10:1; 22:11; 38:21; 71:12do not be far from me.
23 APs 7:6; 44:23; 59:4; 80:2Stir up Yourself, and awake to my right
And to my cause, my God and my Lord.
24 APs 9:4; 26:1; 43:1Judge me, O Loʀᴅ my God, according to Your righteousness,
And BPs 35:19do not let them rejoice over me.
25 Do not let them say in their heart, “APs 35:21Aha, our desire!”
Do not let them say, “We have BPs 56:1; 124:3; Prov 1:12; Lam 2:16swallowed him up!”
26 Let APs 40:14those be ashamed and humiliated altogether who rejoice at my distress;
Let those be BPs 109:29clothed with shame and dishonor who CJob 19:5; Ps 38:16magnify themselves over me.
And CPs 40:16; 70:4let them say continually, “The Loʀᴅ be magnified,
Who DPs 147:11; 149:4delights in the prosperity of His servant.”
28 And APs 51:14; 71:15, 24my tongue shall declare Your righteousness
And Your praise all day long.
