Jeremiah Shares Israel’s Affliction
1 I am the man who has APs 88:7, 15, 16seen affliction
Because of the rod of His wrath.
2 He has driven me and made me walk
In AJob 30:26; Is 59:9; Jer 4:23darkness and not in light.
3 Surely against me He has APs 38:2; Is 5:25turned His hand
Repeatedly all the day.
4 He has caused my APs 31:9, 10; 38:2-8; 102:3-5flesh and my skin to waste away,
He has BPs 51:8; Is 38:13broken my bones.
6 In APs 88:5, 6; 143:3dark places He has made me dwell,
Like those who have long been dead.
7 He has AJob 3:23; 19:8walled me in so that I cannot go out;

8 Even when I cry out and call for help,
He AJob 30:20; Ps 22:2shuts out my prayer.
9 He has AIs 63:17; Hos 2:6blocked my ways with hewn stone;
He has made my paths crooked.
10 He is to me like a bear lying in wait,
Like a lion in secret places.
11 He has turned aside my ways and AJob 16:12, 13; Jer 15:3; Hos 6:1torn me to pieces;
He has made me desolate.

And BJob 6:4; 7:20; Ps 38:2set me as a target for the arrow.

15 He has AJer 9:15filled me with bitterness,
He has made me drunk with wormwood.
He has made me cower in the CJer 6:26dust.
17 My soul has been rejected AIs 59:11; Jer 12:12from peace;
I have forgotten 1Lit goodhappiness.
18 So I say, “My strength has perished,
And so has my AJob 17:15; Ezek 37:11hope from the Loʀᴅ.”
Hope of Relief in God’s Mercy
19 Remember my affliction and my 1Or bitternesswandering, the AJer 9:15; Lam 3:5, 15wormwood and bitterness.
20 Surely AJob 21:6my soul remembers
And is BPs 42:5, 6, 11; 43:5; 44:25bowed down within me.
21 This I recall to my mind,
Therefore I have APs 130:7hope.
22 The Loʀᴅ’s APs 78:38; Jer 3:12; 30:11lovingkindnesses 1Or that we are not consumedindeed never cease,
BMal 3:6For His compassions never fail.
Great is BHeb 10:23Your faithfulness.
24 “The Loʀᴅ is my APs 16:5; 73:26portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I BPs 33:18have hope in Him.”
25 The Loʀᴅ is good to those who APs 27:14; Is 25:9wait for Him,
For the salvation of the Loʀᴅ.
27 It is good for a man that he should bear
The yoke in his youth.
28 Let him AJer 15:17sit alone and be silent
Since He has laid it on him.
Perhaps there is BJer 31:17hope.
Let him be filled with reproach.
31 For the Lord will APs 77:7; 94:14; Is 54:7-10not reject forever,
32 For if He causes grief,
Then He will have APs 78:38; 106:43-45; Hos 11:8compassion
According to His abundant lovingkindness.
Or grieve the sons of men.
34 To crush under His feet

In the presence of the Most High,
