Pharaoh in Pursuit
Now the Loʀᴅ spoke to Moses, saying, “Tell the sons of Israel to turn back and camp before ANum 33:7Pi-hahiroth, between BJer 44:1Migdol and the sea; you shall camp in front of Baal-zephon, opposite it, by the sea.  “For Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, ‘They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’  “Thus AEx 4:21; 7:3; 14:17I will 1Lit make strongharden Pharaoh’s heart, and BEx 14:23he will chase after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and CEx 7:5; 14:25the Egyptians will know that I am the Loʀᴅ.” And they did so.
When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, 1Lit the heart of Pharaoh...was changedPharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?” So he made his chariot ready and took his people with him; and he took six hundred select chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. AEx 14:4The Loʀᴅ 1Lit made stronghardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he chased after the sons of Israel as the sons of Israel were going out 2Lit with a high handBNum 33:3; Acts 13:17boldly. Then AEx 15:9; Josh 24:6the Egyptians chased after them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and they overtook them camping by the sea, BEx 14:2beside Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.
10 As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel 1Lit lifted up their eyeslooked, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they became very frightened; AJosh 24:7; Neh 9:9; Ps 34:17; 107:6so the sons of Israel cried out to the Loʀᴅ. 11 Then AEx 5:21; 15:24; 16:2; Ps 106:7, 8they said to Moses, “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, 1Lit so as to bringbringing us out of Egypt? 12  “AEx 6:9Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘1Lit Cease from usLeave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”
The Sea Is Divided
13 But Moses said to the people, “AGen 15:1; 46:3; Ex 20:20; 2 Chr 20:15, 17; Is 41:10, 13, 14Do not fear! 1Or Take your standStand by and see BEx 14:30; 15:2the salvation of the Loʀᴅ which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. 14  “AEx 14:25; 15:3; Deut 1:30; 3:22; Josh 23:3; 2 Chr 20:29; Neh 4:20The Loʀᴅ will fight for you while BIs 30:15you keep silent.”
15 Then the Loʀᴅ said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward. 16  “As for you, lift up AEx 4:17, 20; 7:19; 14:21, 26; 17:5, 6, 9; Num 20:8, 9, 11; Is 10:26your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall 1Lit enter thego through the midst of the sea on dry land. 17  “As for Me, behold, AEx 14:4, 8I will 1Lit make strongharden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18  “AEx 14:25Then the Egyptians will know that I am the Loʀᴅ, when I am honored through Pharaoh, through his chariots and his horsemen.”
19 AEx 13:21, 22The angel of God, who had been going before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them. 20 So it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel; and there was the cloud 1Lit and the darknessalong with the darkness, yet it gave light at night. Thus the one did not come near the other all night.
21 AEx 7:19; 14:16Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Loʀᴅ 1Lit caused to goswept the sea back by a strong east wind all night and turned the sea into BPs 66:6; 106:9; 136:13, 14dry land, so CEx 15:8; Josh 3:16; 4:23; Neh 9:11; Ps 74:13; 78:13; 114:3, 5; Is 63:12, 13the waters were divided. 22 AEx 15:19; Josh 3:17; 4:22; Neh 9:11; Ps 66:6; 78:13; Heb 11:29The sons of Israel 1Lit entered thewent through the midst of the sea on the dry land, and BEx 14:29; 15:8the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 Then AEx 14:4, 17the Egyptians took up the pursuit, and all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots and his horsemen went in after them into the midst of the sea. 24 At the morning watch, AEx 13:21the Loʀᴅ looked down on the 1Lit camparmy of the Egyptians 2Or inthrough the pillar of fire and cloud and brought the 1Lit camparmy of the Egyptians into confusion. 25 He 1Or removedcaused their chariot wheels to swerve, and He made them drive with difficulty; so the Egyptians said, “Let 2Lit meus flee from Israel, AEx 14:4, 14, 18for the Loʀᴅ is fighting for them against the Egyptians.”
26 Then the Loʀᴅ said to Moses, “AEx 14:16Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may come back over the Egyptians, over their chariots and their horsemen.” 27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and AJosh 4:18the sea returned to its normal state at daybreak, while the Egyptians were fleeing 1Lit to meet itright into it; then the Loʀᴅ 2Lit shook offBEx 15:1, 7; Deut 11:4; Neh 9:11; Ps 78:53; Heb 11:29overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. 28 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, 1Lit in respect toeven Pharaoh’s entire army that had gone into the sea after them; APs 78:53; 106:11not even one of them remained. 29 But the sons of Israel walked on AEx 14:22; Ps 66:6; Is 11:15dry land through the midst of the sea, and the waters were like a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
30 AEx 14:13; Ps 106:8, 10; Is 63:8, 11Thus the Loʀᴅ saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel BPs 58:10; 59:10saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 When Israel saw the great 1Lit handpower which the Loʀᴅ had 2Lit doneused against the Egyptians, the people 3Or reveredfeared the Loʀᴅ, and AEx 4:31; 19:9; Ps 106:12; John 2:11; 11:45they believed in the Loʀᴅ and in His servant Moses.
