Assyria Is God’s Instrument
Woe to those who APs 94:20; Is 29:21; 59:4, 13enact evil statutes
And to those who constantly record 1Lit mischief or misfortuneunjust decisions,
So as AIs 5:23to 1Lit turn aside fromdeprive the needy of justice
And rob the poor of My people of their rights,
So BIs 1:23; 3:14, 15that widows may be their spoil
And that they may plunder the 2Or fatherlessorphans.
Now AJob 31:14what will you do in the BIs 13:6; 26:14, 21; 29:6; Jer 9:9; Hos 9:7; Luke 19:44day of punishment,
And in the devastation which will come CIs 5:26from afar?
DIs 20:6; 30:5, 7; 31:3To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your 1Lit glorywealth?
Nothing remains but to crouch 1Lit underamong the AIs 24:22captives
Or fall 1Lit underamong the BIs 22:2; 34:3; 66:16slain.
CIs 5:25In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

Woe to AIs 7:17; 8:7; 14:24-27; Zeph 2:13-15Assyria, the BJer 51:20rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hands is CIs 13:5; 30:30; 34:2; 66:14My indignation,
I send it against a AIs 9:17godless nation
And commission it against the BIs 9:19people of My fury
To capture booty and CIs 5:29to seize plunder,
And to 1Lit make them a trampled placetrample them down like DIs 5:25mud in the streets.
Yet it AGen 50:20; Mic 4:11, 12; Acts 2:23, 24does not so intend,
Nor does 1Lit its heart so planit plan so in its heart,
But rather it is 2Lit in its heartits purpose to destroy
And to cut off 3Lit not a fewmany nations.
For it says, “Are not my princes 1Lit altogetherall kings?
“Is not AGen 10:10; Amos 6:2Calno like B2 Chr 35:20Carchemish,
Or CNum 34:8Hamath like Arpad,
Or D2 Kin 17:6Samaria like E2 Kin 16:9Damascus?
10 “As my hand has reached to the A2 Kin 19:17, 18kingdoms of the idols,
Whose graven images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 Shall I not 1Lit do thusdo to Jerusalem and her images
Just as I have done to Samaria and AIs 2:8her idols?”
12 So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His A2 Kin 19:31; Is 28:21, 22; 29:14; 65:7work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will 1Lit visitpunish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and BIs 37:23the pomp of 2Lit haughtiness of his eyeshis haughtiness.” 13 For A2 Kin 19:22-24; Is 37:24-27; Ezek 28:4; Dan 4:30he has said,
“By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this,
For I have understanding;
And I BHab 2:6-11removed the boundaries of the peoples
And plundered their treasures,
And like a mighty man I brought down 1Or those who sit on thronestheir inhabitants,
14 And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a AJer 49:16; Obad 4nest,
And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth;
And there was not one that flapped its wing or opened its beak or chirped.”

15 Is the AJer 51:20axe to BIs 29:16; 45:9; Rom 9:20, 21boast itself over the one who chops with it?
Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it?
That would be like CIs 10:5a 1Lit staffclub wielding those who lift it,
Or like CIs 10:5a rod lifting him who is not wood.
16 Therefore the Lord, the 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ of hosts, will send a APs 106:15wasting disease among his BIs 17:4stout warriors;
And under his CIs 8:7; 10:18glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame.
17 And the AIs 30:33; 31:9light of Israel will become a fire and his BIs 37:23Holy One a flame,
And it will CNum 11:1-3; Is 27:4; 33:12; Jer 4:4; 7:20burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a single day.
18 And He will AIs 10:33, 34destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body,
And it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
19 And the AIs 21:17rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number
That a child could write them down.
A Remnant Will Return
20 Now in that day the AIs 1:9; 11:11, 16; 46:3remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob BIs 4:2; 37:31, 32who have escaped, will never again rely on the one who struck them, but will truly C2 Chr 14:11; Is 17:7, 8; 50:10rely on the Loʀᴅ, the Holy One of Israel.
21 A AIs 7:3remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the BIs 9:6mighty God.
22 For ARom 9:27, 28though your people, O Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A BIs 28:22; Dan 9:27; Rom 9:28destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.
23 For a complete destruction, one that is decreed, AIs 28:22; Dan 9:27; Rom 9:28the Lord 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ of hosts will execute in the midst of the whole land.
24 Therefore thus says the Lord 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ of hosts, “O My people who dwell in APs 87:5, 6Zion, BIs 7:4; 12:2; 37:6do not fear the Assyrian 2Lit hewho CEx 5:14-16strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staff against you, the way Egypt did. 25  “For in a very AIs 17:14; Hag 2:6little while BIs 10:5; 26:20; Dan 11:36My indignation against you will be spent and My anger will be directed to their destruction.” 26 The Loʀᴅ of hosts will AIs 37:36-38arouse a scourge against him like the slaughter of BJudg 7:25; Is 9:4Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His CEx 14:16staff will be over the sea and He will lift it up DEx 14:27the way He did in Egypt. 27 So it will be in that day, that 1I.e. the Assyrianhis AIs 9:4; 14:25burden will be removed from your shoulders and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be broken because BIs 30:23; 55:2of fatness.

28 He has come against Aiath,
He has passed through A1 Sam 14:2Migron;
At B1 Sam 13:2, 5Michmash he deposited his CJudg 18:21; 1 Sam 17:22baggage.
29 They have gone through A1 Sam 13:23the pass, saying,

CJosh 18:25; 1 Sam 7:17Ramah is terrified, and D1 Sam 10:26Gibeah of Saul has fled away.
30 Cry aloud with your voice, O daughter of A1 Sam 25:44Gallim!
Pay attention, Laishah and 1An ancient version reads Answer her, O Anathothwretched BJosh 21:18; Jer 1:1Anathoth!
31 Madmenah has fled.
The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge.
32 Yet today he will halt at A1 Sam 21:1; 22:9Nob;
He BIs 19:16; Zech 2:9shakes his fist at the mountain of the 1Another reading is house ofCIs 1:8; Jer 6:23daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord, the 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ of hosts, will lop off the boughs with a terrible crash;
Those also who are AIs 37:24, 36-38; Ezek 31:3; Amos 2:9tall in stature will be cut down
And those who are lofty will be abased.
34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe,
And AIs 2:13; 33:9; 37:24Lebanon will fall 1Or as a mighty oneby the Mighty One.
