1 A2 Chr 32:20-22; Is 37:1And when King Hezekiah heard it, he B2 Kin 18:37tore his clothes, C1 Kin 21:27covered himself with sackcloth and entered the house of the Loʀᴅ. 2 Then he sent Eliakim who was over the household with Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests, A2 Sam 3:31covered with sackcloth, to BIs 1:1; 2:1Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. 3 They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a day of distress, rebuke, and rejection; for children have come to birth and there is no strength to deliver. 4  ‘AJosh 14:12; 2 Sam 16:12Perhaps the Loʀᴅ your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent B2 Kin 18:35to reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words which the Loʀᴅ your God has heard. Therefore, offer a prayer for CIs 1:9the remnant that is left.’ ” 5 So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6 Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your master, ‘Thus says the Loʀᴅ, “Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the A2 Kin 18:17servants of the king of Assyria B2 Kin 18:22-25, 30, 35have blasphemed Me. 7  “Behold, I will put a spirit in him so that A2 Kin 7:6he will hear a rumor and return to his own land. And B2 Kin 19:37I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.” ’ ”

8 Then Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against AJosh 10:29Libnah, for he had heard that 1Lit hethe king had left B2 Kin 18:14Lachish. 9 When he heard them say concerning Tirhakah king of 1Or EthiopiaCush, “Behold, he has come out to fight against you,” he sent messengers again to Hezekiah saying, 10 “Thus you shall say to Hezekiah king of 1Lit Judah, saying,Judah, ‘Do not A2 Kin 18:5let your God in whom you trust deceive you saying, “B2 Kin 18:30Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 11  ‘Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands, destroying them completely. So will you be 1Lit deliveredspared? 12  ‘A2 Kin 18:33Did the gods of 1Lit thethose nations which my fathers destroyed deliver them, even B2 Kin 17:6Gozan and CGen 11:31Haran and Rezeph and DIs 37:12the sons of Eden who were in Telassar? 13  ‘A2 Kin 18:34Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, and of Hena and Ivvah?’ ”

14 Then AIs 37:14Hezekiah took the 1Lit letters...read themletter from the hand of the messengers and read it, and he went up to the house of the Loʀᴅ and 2Lit Hezekiah spreadspread it out before the Loʀᴅ. 15 Hezekiah prayed before the Loʀᴅ and said, “O Loʀᴅ, the God of Israel, AEx 25:22; Is 37:14who are 1Lit seatedenthroned above the cherubim, B2 Kin 5:15You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16  “APs 31:2; Is 37:17Incline Your ear, O Loʀᴅ, and hear; B1 Kin 8:29; 2 Chr 6:40open Your eyes, O Loʀᴅ, and see; and listen to the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent C2 Kin 19:4to reproach the living God. 17  “Truly, O Loʀᴅ, the kings of Assyria have devastated the nations and their lands 18 and have cast their gods into the fire, AIs 44:9-20; Acts 17:29for they were not gods but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. So they have destroyed them. 19  “Now, O Loʀᴅ our God, I pray, deliver us from his hand A1 Kin 8:42, 43that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O B2 Kin 19:15Loʀᴅ, are God.”

20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah saying, “Thus says the Loʀᴅ, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have prayed to Me about Sennacherib king of Assyria, A2 Kin 20:5I have heard you.’ 21  “This is the word that the Loʀᴅ has spoken against him:

29 ‘Then this shall be AEx 3:12; 2 Kin 20:8, 9the sign for you: 1Lit eatingyou will eat this year what grows of itself, in the second year what springs from the same, and in the third year sow, reap, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 30  ‘A2 Kin 19:4; 2 Chr 32:22, 23The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward. 31  ‘For out of Jerusalem will go forth a remnant, and AIs 10:20out of Mount Zion 1Lit those who escapesurvivors. 32 ‘Therefore thus says the Loʀᴅ concerning the king of Assyria, “AIs 8:7-10He will not come to this city or shoot an arrow there; and he will not come before it with a shield or throw up a siege ramp against it. 33  “A2 Kin 19:28By the way that he came, by the same he will return, and he shall not come to this city,” ’ declares the Loʀᴅ. 34 ‘A2 Kin 20:6; Is 31:5For I will defend this city to save it for My own sake and B1 Kin 11:12, 13for My servant David’s sake.’ ”

35 A2 Sam 24:16; 2 Chr 32:21Then it happened that night that the angel of the Loʀᴅ went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when 1Lit theymen rose early in the morning, behold, all of them were 2Lit dead bodiesdead. 36 So A2 Kin 19:7, 28, 33Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and returned home, and lived at BJon 1:2Nineveh. 37 It came about as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, that 1Some ancient mss read Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote himA2 Kin 19:17, 31Adrammelech and Sharezer killed him with the sword; and they escaped into BGen 8:4; Jer 51:27the land of Ararat. And CEzra 4:2Esarhaddon his son became king in his place.
