Jonah’s Disobedience
The word of the Loʀᴅ came to A2 Kin 14:25; Matt 12:39-41; 16:4; Luke 11:29, 30, 32Jonah the son of Amittai saying, “Arise, go to AGen 10:11; 2 Kin 19:36; Is 37:37; Nah 1:1; Zeph 2:13Nineveh the great city and BIs 58:1cry against it, for their CGen 18:20; Hos 7:2wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah rose up to flee to AIs 23:1, 6, 10; Jer 10:9Tarshish BGen 4:16; Ps 139:7, 9, 10from the presence of the Loʀᴅ. So he went down to CJosh 19:46; 2 Chr 2:16; Ezra 3:7; Acts 9:36, 43Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Loʀᴅ.
The APs 107:23-28; 135:6, 7Loʀᴅ hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to 1Lit be brokenbreak up. Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried to A1 Kin 18:26his god, and they BActs 27:18, 19, 38threw the 1Lit vesselscargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it 2Lit from upon themfor them. But Jonah had gone below into the hold of the ship, lain down and fallen sound asleep. So the captain approached him and said, “How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, APs 107:28call on your god. Perhaps your B2 Sam 12:22; Amos 5:15; Jon 3:9god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish.”
Each man said to his mate, “Come, let us AJosh 7:14-18; 1 Sam 10:20, 21; 14:41, 42; Acts 1:23-26cast lots so we may 1Lit knowlearn on whose account this calamity has struck us.” So they cast lots and the BNum 32:23; Prov 16:33lot fell on Jonah. Then they said to him, “AJosh 7:19; 1 Sam 14:43Tell us, now! On whose account has this calamity struck us? What is your BGen 47:3; 1 Sam 30:13occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?” He said to them, “I am a AGen 14:13; Ex 1:15; 2:13Hebrew, and I B2 Kin 17:25, 28, 32, 33fear the Loʀᴅ CEzra 1:2; Neh 1:4; Ps 136:26; Dan 2:18God of heaven who DNeh 9:6; Ps 95:5; 146:6made the sea and the dry land.”
10 Then the men became extremely frightened and they said to him, “1Lit What is this you have doneHow could you do this?” For the men knew that he was AJob 27:22; Jon 1:3fleeing from the presence of the Loʀᴅ, because he had told them. 11 So they said to him, “What should we do to you that the sea may become calm 1Lit from upon usfor us?”—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. 12 He said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm 1Lit from upon youfor you, for I know that A2 Sam 24:17; 1 Chr 21:17on account of me this great storm has come upon you.” 13 However, the men 1Lit dug their oars into the waterrowed desperately to return to land but they could not, for the sea was becoming even stormier against them. 14 Then they called on the APs 107:28; Jon 1:16Loʀᴅ and said, “We earnestly pray, O Loʀᴅ, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life and do not put innocent blood on us; for BPs 115:3; 135:6; Dan 4:34, 35You, O Loʀᴅ, have done as You have pleased.”
15 So they picked up Jonah, threw him into the sea, and the sea APs 65:7; 93:3, 4; 107:29stopped its raging. 16 Then the men feared the Loʀᴅ greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Loʀᴅ and made APs 50:14; 66:13, 14vows.
17 1Ch 2:1 in HebAnd the Loʀᴅ appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the AMatt 12:40; 16:4stomach of the fish three days and three nights.
