1 Then AGen 46:31Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers and their flocks and their herds and all that they have, have come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of BGen 45:10; 46:28Goshen.” 2 He took five men from among his brothers and AActs 7:13presented them to Pharaoh. 3 Then Pharaoh said to his brothers, “AGen 46:33What is your occupation?” So they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are BGen 46:34shepherds, both we and our fathers.” 4 They said to Pharaoh, “AGen 15:13; Deut 26:5; Ps 105:23We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks, for BGen 43:1; Acts 7:11the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now, therefore, please let your servants 1Lit dwellCGen 46:34live in the land of Goshen.” 5 Then Pharaoh said to 1Lit Joseph, sayingJoseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you. 6  “The land of Egypt is 1Lit before youat your disposal; 2Lit cause them to dwellsettle your father and your brothers in AGen 45:10, 18; 47:11the best of the land, let them 3Lit dwelllive in the land of Goshen; and if you know any BEx 18:21, 25; 1 Kin 11:28; Prov 22:29capable men among them, then 4Lit appoint them rulersput them in charge of my livestock.”

7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob and 1Lit set him beforepresented him to Pharaoh; and Jacob AGen 47:10; 2 Sam 14:22; 1 Kin 8:66blessed Pharaoh. 8 Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How many 1Lit are the days of the years of your lifeyears have you lived?” 9 So Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The 1Lit days of the yearsAHeb 11:9, 13years of my sojourning are one hundred and 2Lit thirty yearsthirty; few and 3Lit evilunpleasant have been the 1Lit days of the yearsyears of my life, nor have they 4Lit reachedattained BGen 25:7; 35:28the 1Lit days of the yearsyears 5Lit of the life of my fathersthat my fathers lived during the days of their sojourning.” 10 And Jacob AGen 47:7blessed Pharaoh, and went out from 1Lit Pharaoh’shis presence. 11 So Joseph 1Lit caused to dwellsettled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in AGen 47:6, 27the best of the land, in the land of BEx 1:11; 12:37Rameses, as Pharaoh had ordered. 12 Joseph AGen 45:11provided his father and his brothers and all his father’s household with 1Or breadfood, according to their little ones.

13 Now there was no 1Or breadfood in all the land, because the famine was very severe, so that AGen 41:30; Acts 7:11the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan languished because of the famine. 14 AGen 41:56Joseph gathered all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain which they bought, and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. 15 When the money was all spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph 1Lit sayingand said, “Give us 2Or breadfood, for AGen 47:19why should we die in your presence? For our money 3Lit ceasesis gone.” 16 Then Joseph said, “Give up your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock, since your money 1Lit ceasesis gone.” 17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them 1Or breadfood in exchange for the horses and the 2Lit livestock of the flocks and livestock of the herdsflocks and the herds and the donkeys; and he 3Lit led them as a shepherdfed them with 1Or breadfood in exchange for all their livestock 4Lit in that yearthat year. 18 When that year was ended, they came to him the 1Lit secondnext year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that our money is all spent, and the 2Lit livestock of the cattlecattle are my lord’s. There is nothing left 3Lit in the presence offor my lord except our bodies and our lands. 19  “Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for 1Or breadfood, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh. So give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”

20 So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for 1Lit Egypt, every manevery Egyptian sold his field, because the famine was severe upon them. Thus the land became Pharaoh’s. 21 As for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other. 22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had an allotment from Pharaoh, and they 1Lit ate their allotmentlived off the allotment which Pharaoh gave them. Therefore, they did not sell their land. 23 Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have today bought you and your land for Pharaoh; now, here is seed for you, and you may sow the land. 24  “1Lit It shall come about...that you shallAt the harvest you shall give a AGen 41:34fifth to Pharaoh, and 2Lit four partsfour-fifths shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food and for those of your households and as food for your little ones.” 25 So they said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.” 26 Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt valid to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth; AGen 47:22only the land of the priests 1Lit alone diddid not become Pharaoh’s.

27 Now Israel 1Lit dweltlived in the land of Egypt, in 2Lit in the land of GoshenGoshen, and they AGen 47:11acquired property in it and BGen 17:6; 26:4; 35:11; Ex 1:7; Deut 26:5; Acts 7:17were fruitful and became very numerous. 28 Jacob lived in the land of Egypt AGen 47:9seventeen years; so the 1Lit days of Jacob, the years of his lifelength of Jacob’s life was one hundred and forty-seven years.

29 When 1Lit the days of Israel to die drew nearADeut 31:14; 1 Kin 2:1the time for Israel to die drew near, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “Please, if I have found favor in your sight, BGen 24:2place now your hand under my thigh and CGen 24:49deal with me in kindness and 2Lit truthfaithfulness. Please do not bury me in Egypt, 30 but when I AGen 15:15; Deut 31:16lie down with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in BGen 23:17-20; 25:9, 10; 35:29; 49:29-32; 50:5, 13; Acts 7:15, 16their burial place.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.” 31 He said, “AGen 21:23, 24; 24:3; 31:53; 50:25Swear to me.” So he swore to him. Then B1 Kin 1:47Israel bowed in worship at the head of the bed.
