1 A2 Chr 5:2-10Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all BNum 1:4; 7:2the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the fathers’ households of the sons of Israel, to King Solomon in Jerusalem, C2 Sam 6:12-17; 1 Chr 15:25-29to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Loʀᴅ from D2 Sam 5:7the city of David, which is Zion. 2 All the men of Israel assembled themselves to King Solomon at ALev 23:34; 1 Kin 8:65; 2 Chr 7:8-10the feast, in the month Ethanim, which is the seventh month. 3 Then all the elders of Israel came, and ANum 7:9; Deut 31:9; Josh 3:3, 6the priests took up the ark. 4 They brought up the ark of the Loʀᴅ and A1 Kin 3:4; 2 Chr 1:3the tent of meeting and all the holy utensils, which were in the tent, and the priests and the Levites brought them up. 5 And King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, who were assembled to him, A2 Sam 6:13; 2 Chr 1:6were with him before the ark, sacrificing 1Lit sheep and oxen...numbered for multitudeso many sheep and oxen they could not be counted or numbered. 6 Then A1 Kin 8:3the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Loʀᴅ B1 Kin 6:19to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, to the most holy place, C1 Kin 6:27under the wings of the cherubim. 7 For the cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubim made a covering over the ark and its poles from above. 8 But AEx 25:13-15; 37:4, 5the poles were so long that the ends of the poles could be seen from the holy place before the inner sanctuary, but they could not be seen outside; they are there to this day. 9 AEx 25:16, 21; Deut 10:2-5; Heb 9:4There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moses put there at Horeb, where BEx 24:7, 8; 40:20; Deut 4:13the Loʀᴅ made a covenant with the sons of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. 10 It happened that when the priests came from the holy place, AEx 40:34, 35; 2 Chr 7:1, 2the cloud filled the house of the Loʀᴅ, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Loʀᴅ filled the house of the Loʀᴅ.

12 A2 Chr 6:1Then Solomon said,

14 Then the king 1Lit turned his face aboutfaced about and A2 Sam 6:18; 1 Kin 8:55blessed all the assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel was standing. 15 He said, “A1 Chr 29:10, 20; Neh 9:5; Luke 1:68Blessed be the Loʀᴅ, the God of Israel, B2 Sam 7:12, 13; 1 Chr 22:10who spoke with His mouth to my father David and has fulfilled it with His hand, saying, 16 ‘A2 Sam 7:4, 5; 1 Chr 17:3-10; 2 Chr 6:5Since the day that I brought My people Israel from Egypt, I did not choose a city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house that BDeut 12:5, 11My name might be there, but C1 Sam 16:1; 2 Sam 7:8I chose David to be over My people Israel.’ 17  “A2 Sam 7:2, 3; 1 Chr 17:1, 2Now it was 1Lit within the heart of my father David to build a house for the name of the Loʀᴅ, the God of Israel. 18  “But the Loʀᴅ said to my father David, ‘Because it was 1Lit within your heart to build a house for My name, you did well that it was 1Lit within your heart. 19  ‘A2 Sam 7:5, 12, 13; 1 Kin 5:3, 5; 1 Chr 17:11, 12; 22:8-10Nevertheless you shall not build the house, but your son who 1Lit will come forth from your loinswill be born to you, he will build the house for My name.’ 20  “Now the Loʀᴅ has fulfilled His word which He spoke; for A1 Chr 28:5, 6I have risen in place of my father David and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Loʀᴅ 1Lit spokepromised, and have built the house for the name of the Loʀᴅ, the God of Israel. 21  “There I have set a place for the ark, ADeut 31:26; 1 Kin 8:9in which is the covenant of the Loʀᴅ, which He made with our fathers when He brought them from the land of Egypt.”

22 Then A1 Kin 8:54; 2 Chr 6:12Solomon stood before the altar of the Loʀᴅ in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and BEx 9:33; Ezra 9:5spread out his hands toward heaven. 23 He said, “O Loʀᴅ, the God of Israel, A1 Sam 2:2; 2 Sam 7:22there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth beneath, BDeut 7:9; Neh 1:5; 9:32; Dan 9:4keeping covenant and showing lovingkindness to Your servants who walk before You with all their heart, 24 who have kept with Your servant, my father David, that which You have 1Lit spoken topromised him; indeed, You have spoken with Your mouth and have fulfilled it with Your hand as it is this day. 25  “Now therefore, O Loʀᴅ, the God of Israel, keep with Your servant David my father that which You have 1Lit spoken topromised him, saying, ‘2Lit There shall not be cut off to you a man from before MeA1 Kin 2:4You shall not lack a man to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your sons take heed to their way to walk before Me as you have walked.’ 26  “Now therefore, O God of Israel, let Your word, I pray, be confirmed A2 Sam 7:25which You have spoken to Your servant, my father David.

27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, A2 Chr 2:6; Ps 139:7-16; Is 66:1; Jer 23:24; Acts 7:49heaven and the 1Lit heaven of heavenshighest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built! 28  “Yet have regard to the APhil 4:6prayer of Your servant and to his supplication, O Loʀᴅ my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer which Your servant prays before You today; 29 A2 Chr 7:15; Neh 1:6that Your eyes may be open toward this house night and day, toward BDeut 12:11the place of which You have said, ‘My name shall be there,’ to listen to the prayer which Your servant shall pray toward this place. 30  “ANeh 1:6Listen to the supplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, BDan 6:10when they pray toward this place; hear in heaven Your dwelling place; hear and CEx 34:6, 7; Ps 85:2; Dan 9:9; 1 John 1:9forgive.

31 “AEx 22:8-11If a man sins against his neighbor and is made to take an oath, and he comes and takes an oath before Your altar in this house, 32 then hear in heaven and act and judge Your servants, ADeut 25:1condemning the wicked by bringing his way on his own head and justifying the righteous by giving him according to his righteousness.

33 “ALev 26:17, 25; Deut 28:25, 48When Your people Israel are 1Lit smittendefeated before an enemy, because they have sinned against You, BLev 26:40-42if they turn to You again and confess Your name and pray and make supplication to You in this house, 34 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to their fathers.

35 “ALev 26:19; Deut 11:16, 17; 2 Sam 24:10-13When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain, because they have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name and turn from their sin when You afflict them, 36 then hear in heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants and of Your people Israel, A1 Sam 12:23; Ps 5:8; 25:4, 5; 27:11; 86:11; 119:133; Jer 6:16indeed, teach them the good way in which they should walk. And B1 Kin 18:1, 41-45; Jer 14:22send rain on Your land, which You have given Your people for an inheritance.

37 “ALev 26:16, 25, 26; Deut 28:21-23, 38-42If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, locust or grasshopper, if their enemy besieges them in the land of their 1Lit gatescities, whatever plague, whatever sickness there is, 38 whatever prayer or supplication is made by any man or by all Your people Israel, 1Lit who shall know eacheach knowing the 2Lit plagueaffliction of his own heart, and spreading his 3Lit palmshands toward this house; 39 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive and act and render to each according to all his ways, A1 Sam 2:3; 16:7whose heart You know, for B1 Chr 28:9; Ps 11:4; Jer 17:10; John 2:24, 25; Acts 1:24You alone know the hearts of all the sons of men, 40 that they may 1Or reverefear You all the days that they live 2Lit on the face of the landin the land which You have given to our fathers.

41 “Also concerning the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel, when he comes from a far country for Your name’s sake 42 (for they will hear of Your great name AEx 13:3; Deut 3:24and Your mighty hand, and of Your outstretched arm); when he comes and prays toward this house, 43 hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, in order AJosh 4:23, 24; 1 Sam 17:46; Ps 67:2that all the peoples of the earth may know Your name, to 1Or reverencefear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that 2Lit Your name is called upon this house which I have builtthis house which I have built is called by Your name.

44 “When Your people go out to battle against 1Lit histheir enemy, by whatever way You shall send them, and A2 Chr 14:11they pray to the Loʀᴅ 2Lit in the way oftoward the city which You have chosen and the house which I have built for Your name, 45 then hear in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their 1Lit right or justicecause.

46 “When they sin against You (for APs 130:3, 4; 143:2; Prov 20:9; Eccl 7:20; Rom 3:23; 1 John 1:8-10there is no man who does not sin) and You are angry with them and deliver them to an enemy, so that 1Lit their captors take them captivethey take them away captive BLev 26:34-39; 2 Kin 17:6, 18; 25:21to the land of the enemy, far off or near; 47 ALev 26:40-42; Neh 9:2if they 1Lit return to their hearttake thought in the land where they have been taken captive, and repent and make supplication to You in the land of those who have taken them captive, saying, ‘BEzra 9:6, 7; Neh 1:6; Ps 106:6; Dan 9:5We have sinned and have committed iniquity, we have acted wickedly’; 48 ADeut 4:29; 1 Sam 7:3, 4; Neh 1:9if they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who have taken them captive, and BDan 6:10; Jon 2:4pray to You toward their land which You have given to their fathers, the city which You have chosen, and the house which I have built for Your name; 49 then hear their prayer and their supplication in heaven Your dwelling place, and maintain their 1Lit judgmentcause, 50 and forgive Your people who have sinned against You and all their transgressions which they have transgressed against You, and A2 Chr 30:9; Ps 106:46; Acts 7:10make them objects of compassion before those who have taken them captive, that they may have compassion on them 51 (AEx 32:11, 12; Deut 9:26-29for they are Your people and Your inheritance which You have brought forth from Egypt, BDeut 4:20; Jer 11:4from the midst of the iron furnace), 52 A1 Kin 8:29that Your eyes may be open to the supplication of Your servant and to the supplication of Your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they call to You. 53  “For You have separated them from all the peoples of the earth as Your inheritance, AEx 19:5, 6; Deut 9:26-29as You spoke through Moses Your servant, when You brought our fathers forth from Egypt, O Lord 1Heb YHWH, usually rendered LoʀᴅGoᴅ.”

54 A2 Chr 7:1When Solomon had finished praying this entire prayer and supplication to the Loʀᴅ, B2 Chr 6:13he arose from before the altar of the Loʀᴅ, from kneeling on his knees with his 1Lit palmshands spread toward heaven. 55 And he stood and ANum 6:23-26; 2 Sam 6:18; 1 Kin 8:14blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying:

56 “Blessed be the Loʀᴅ, who has given rest to His people Israel, ADeut 12:10according to all that He 1Lit spokepromised; BJosh 21:45; 23:14, 15not one word has 2Lit fallenfailed of all His good 3Lit wordpromise, which He 1Lit spokepromised through Moses His servant. 57  “May the Loʀᴅ our God be with us, as He was with our fathers; ADeut 31:6, 17; Josh 1:5; 1 Sam 12:22; Rom 8:31; Heb 13:5may He not leave us or forsake us, 58 that APs 119:36; Jer 31:33He may incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His ordinances, which He commanded our fathers. 59  “And may these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before the Loʀᴅ, be near to the Loʀᴅ our God day and night, that He may maintain the 1Lit judgmentcause of His servant and the 1Lit judgmentcause of His people Israel, 2Lit the thing of a day in its dayas each day requires, 60 so AJosh 4:24; 1 Sam 17:46; 1 Kin 8:43; 2 Kin 19:19that all the peoples of the earth may know that BDeut 4:35; 1 Kin 18:39; Jer 10:10-12the Loʀᴅ is God; there is no one else. 61  “ADeut 18:13; 1 Kin 11:4; 2 Kin 20:3Let your heart therefore be 1Lit complete withwholly devoted to the Loʀᴅ our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day.”

62 A2 Chr 7:4-10Now the king and all Israel with him B2 Sam 6:17-19; Ezra 6:16, 17offered sacrifice before the Loʀᴅ. 63 Solomon offered for the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered to the Loʀᴅ, 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep. AEzra 6:15-18; Neh 12:27So the king and all the sons of Israel dedicated the house of the Loʀᴅ. 64 On the same day the king consecrated the middle of the court that was before the house of the Loʀᴅ, because there he 1Lit madeoffered the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat of the peace offerings; for A2 Chr 4:1the bronze altar that was before the Loʀᴅ was too small to hold the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat of the peace offerings.

65 So ALev 23:34-42; 1 Kin 8:2Solomon observed the feast at that time, and all Israel with him, a great assembly BNum 34:8; Josh 13:5; Judg 3:3; 2 Kin 14:25from the entrance of Hamath CGen 15:18; Ex 23:31; Num 34:5; Josh 13:3to the brook of Egypt, before the Loʀᴅ our God, for seven days and seven more days, even fourteen days. 66 On the eighth day he sent the people away and they blessed the king. Then they went to their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that the Loʀᴅ had 1Lit doneshown to David His servant and to Israel His people.
