Israel Provoked God
“Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess ADeut 4:38; 7:1; 11:23nations greater and mightier than you, great cities 1Lit and fortifiedBDeut 1:28fortified to heaven, a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said,ANum 13:22, 28, 33; Josh 11:21, 22Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’  “Know therefore today that ADeut 31:3; Josh 3:11it is the Loʀᴅ your God who is crossing over before you as BDeut 4:24; Heb 12:29a consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that CEx 23:31; Deut 7:24you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the Loʀᴅ has spoken to you.
ADeut 8:17; 9:7, 24; 31:27Do not say in your heart when the Loʀᴅ your God has driven them out before 1Lit you sayingyou, ‘Because of my righteousness the Loʀᴅ has brought me in to possess this land,’ but it is BLev 18:3, 24-30; Deut 12:31; 18:9-14because of the wickedness of these nations that the Loʀᴅ is dispossessing them before you.  “It is ATitus 3:5not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Loʀᴅ your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm BGen 12:7; 13:15; 15:7; 17:8; 26:4; 28:13the 1Lit wordoath which the Loʀᴅ swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
“Know, then, it is not because of your righteousness that the Loʀᴅ your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are ADeut 9:13; 10:16; 31:27a 1Or stiff-neckedstubborn people.  “Remember, do not forget how you provoked the Loʀᴅ your God to wrath in the wilderness; AEx 14:10f; Num 14:22from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the Loʀᴅ.  “Even AEx 32:7-10; Ps 106:19at Horeb you provoked the Loʀᴅ to wrath, and the Loʀᴅ was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you.  “When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Loʀᴅ had made with you, then I remained on the mountain forty days and nights; AEx 24:18; 34:28; Deut 8:3; 9:18I neither ate bread nor drank water. 10  “The Loʀᴅ gave me the two tablets of stone ADeut 4:13written by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which the Loʀᴅ had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. 11  “It came about ADeut 9:9at the end of forty days and nights that the Loʀᴅ gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12  “AEx 32:7, 8Then the Loʀᴅ said to me, ‘Arise, go down from here quickly, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. They have BJudg 2:17quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made a molten image for themselves.’ 13  “The AEx 32:9Loʀᴅ spoke further to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, it is a 1Or stiff-neckedBDeut 10:16; 31:27; 2 Kin 17:14stubborn people. 14  ‘AEx 32:10Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and BPs 9:5; 109:13blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’
15 AEx 32:15-19So I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16  “And I saw that you had indeed sinned against the Loʀᴅ your God. You had made for yourselves a molten calf; you had turned aside quickly from the way which the Loʀᴅ had commanded you. 17  “I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my hands and smashed them before your eyes. 18  “AEx 34:28I fell down before the Loʀᴅ, BDeut 10:10as at the first, forty days and nights; CDeut 9:9I neither ate bread nor drank water, DEx 34:9because of all your sin which you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of the Loʀᴅ to provoke Him to anger. 19  “For AEx 32:10f; Heb 12:21I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which the Loʀᴅ was wrathful against you in order to destroy you, BEx 34:10; Deut 10:10but the Loʀᴅ listened to me that time also. 20  “The Loʀᴅ was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time. 21  “AEx 32:20I took your 1Lit sinsinful thing, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the brook that came down from the mountain.
22 “Again at ANum 11:3Taberah and at BEx 17:7Massah and at CNum 11:34Kibroth-hattaavah you provoked the Loʀᴅ to wrath. 23  “When the Loʀᴅ sent you from ADeut 1:2Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘BDeut 1:21Go up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the 1Lit mouthcommand of the Loʀᴅ your God; CDeut 1:26; Ps 106:24you neither believed Him nor listened to His voice. 24  “ADeut 9:7; 31:27You have been rebellious against the Loʀᴅ from the day I knew you.
25 ADeut 9:18So I fell down before the Loʀᴅ the forty days and nights, which I 1Lit fell downdid because the Loʀᴅ had said He would destroy you. 26  “AEx 32:11-13; 1 Sam 7:9; Jer 15:1I prayed to the Loʀᴅ and said, ‘O Lord Goᴅ, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27  ‘Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look at the stubbornness of this people or at their wickedness or their sin. 28  ‘Otherwise the land from which You brought us may say, “AEx 32:12; Num 14:16Because the Loʀᴅ was not able to bring them into the land which He had 1Lit spoken topromised them and because He hated them He has brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.” 29  ‘Yet they are Your people, even ADeut 4:20; 1 Kin 8:51; Neh 1:10; Ps 106:40Your inheritance, whom You have brought out by Your BDeut 4:34great power and Your outstretched arm.’
