Jacob Is Sent Away
1 So Isaac called Jacob and AGen 27:33blessed him and charged him, and said to him, “BGen 24:3, 4You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. 2 “Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of AGen 25:20Bethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother. 3 “May 1Heb El ShaddaiAGen 17:1; 35:11; 48:3God Almighty BGen 22:17bless you and CGen 17:6, 20make you fruitful and DGen 17:2; 26:4, 24multiply you, that you may become a EGen 35:11; 48:4company of peoples. 4 “May He also give you the AGen 12:2; 22:17blessing of Abraham, to you and to your 1Lit seeddescendants with you, that you may BGen 15:7, 8; 17:8possess the land of your C1 Chr 29:15; Ps 39:12sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.” 5 Then AGen 27:43Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6 Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take to himself a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he charged him, saying, “AGen 28:1You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” 7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Paddan-aram. 8 So Esau saw that AGen 24:3; 26:34, 35; 27:46the daughters of Canaan displeased 1Lit in the eyes of hishis father Isaac; 9 and Esau went to Ishmael, and 1Lit took for his wifemarried, AGen 26:34; 36:2besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth.
Jacob’s Dream
10 Then Jacob departed from AGen 26:23Beersheba and went toward BGen 12:4, 5; 27:43Haran. 11 He 1Lit lighted oncame to 2Lit the placea AGen 28:19certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it 3Lit at his head-placeunder his head, and lay down in that place. 12 AGen 41:1; Num 12:6He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, BJohn 1:51the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 And behold, AGen 35:1; Amos 7:7the Loʀᴅ stood 1Or beside himabove it and said, “I am the Loʀᴅ, BGen 26:3, 24the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it CGen 13:15, 17; 26:3to you and to DGen 12:7; 15:18your 2Lit seeddescendants. 14 “Your 1Lit seeddescendants will also be like AGen 13:16; 22:17the dust of the earth, and you will 2Lit break throughspread out BGen 13:14, 15to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and CGen 12:3; 18:18; 22:18; 26:4in you and in your 1Lit seeddescendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 “Behold, AGen 26:3, 24; 31:3I am with you and BNum 6:24; Ps 121:5, 7, 8will keep you wherever you go, and CGen 48:21; Deut 30:3will bring you back to this land; for DNum 23:19; Deut 7:9; 31:6, 8I will not leave you until I have done what I have 1Lit spoken topromised you.” 16 Then Jacob A1 Kin 3:15; Jer 31:26awoke from his sleep and said, “BEx 3:4-6; Josh 5:13-15; Ps 139:7-12Surely the Loʀᴅ is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “APs 68:35How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took AGen 28:11; 35:14the stone that he had put 1Lit at his head-placeunder his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. 19 He called the name of that place 1I.e. the house of GodAJudg 1:23Bethel; however, 2Lit at the firstpreviously the name of the city had been BGen 35:6; 48:3Luz. 20 Then Jacob AGen 31:13; Judg 11:30; 2 Sam 15:8made a vow, saying, “BGen 28:15If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I 1Lit gotake, and will give me 2Lit breadC1 Tim 6:8food to eat and garments to wear, 21 and AJudg 11:31I return to my father’s house in 1Lit peacesafety, BDeut 26:17then the Loʀᴅ will be my God. 22 “This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, AGen 35:7will be God’s house, and BLev 27:30; Deut 14:22of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
