1 So Abram went up from Egypt to AGen 12:9the 1I.e. South countryNegev, he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with him.

2 Now Abram was AGen 24:35very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold. 3 He went 1Lit by his stageson his journeys from the 2I.e. South countryNegev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, AGen 12:8between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place of the AGen 12:7, 8altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the Loʀᴅ. 5 Now AGen 12:5Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. 6 And AGen 36:7the land could not 1Lit bearsustain them 2Lit to dwellwhile dwelling together, BGen 12:5, 16; 13:2for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together. 7 AGen 26:20And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. Now BGen 12:6; 15:20, 21the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land.

8 AProv 15:18; 20:3So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. 9  “Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left.” 10 Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the 1Lit circleAGen 19:17-29; Deut 34:3valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere—this was before the Loʀᴅ BGen 19:24destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like CGen 2:8, 10the garden of the Loʀᴅ, DGen 47:6like the land of Egypt as you go to EGen 14:2, 8; 19:22; Deut 34:3Zoar. 11 So Lot chose for himself all the 1Lit circlevalley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other. 12 Abram 1Lit dweltsettled in the land of Canaan, while Lot 1Lit dweltsettled in AGen 14:2; 19:24, 25, 29the cities of the 2Lit circlevalley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom. 13 Now AGen 18:20; Ezek 16:49the men of Sodom were wicked 1Lit wicked and sinners exceedinglyexceedingly and BGen 39:9; Num 32:23; 2 Pet 2:7, 8sinners against the Loʀᴅ.

14 The Loʀᴅ said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “ADeut 3:27; 34:1-4; Is 49:18Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, BGen 28:14northward and southward and eastward and westward; 15 AGen 12:7for all the land which you see, BGen 13:17; 15:7; 17:8; 2 Chr 20:7; Acts 7:5I will give it to you and to your 1Lit seeddescendants forever. 16  “I will make your 1Lit seeddescendants AGen 16:10; 28:14; Num 23:10as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your 1Lit seeddescendants can also be numbered. 17  “Arise, ANum 13:17-24walk about the land through its length and breadth; for BGen 13:15I will give it to you.” 18 Then Abram moved his tent and came and dwelt by the 1Or terebinthsAGen 14:13oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built BGen 8:20; 12:7, 8an altar to the Loʀᴅ.
