1 Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by 1Lit their journeyingsstages from the wilderness of AEx 16:1; Num 33:12Sin, according to the 2Lit mouthcommand of the Loʀᴅ, and camped at BEx 19:2; Num 33:14Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 Therefore the people AEx 14:11; Num 20:2, 3, 13quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “BEx 16:8Why do you quarrel with me? CDeut 6:16; Ps 78:18, 41; Matt 4:7; 1 Cor 10:9Why do you test the Loʀᴅ?” 3 But the people thirsted there for water; and 1Lit the peoplethey AEx 16:2, 3grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill 2Lit meus and 3Lit myour children and 3Lit myBEx 12:38our livestock with thirst?” 4 So Moses cried out to the Loʀᴅ, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A ANum 14:10; 1 Sam 30:6little more and they will stone me.” 5 Then the Loʀᴅ said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of AEx 3:16, 18the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which BEx 7:20you struck the Nile, and go. 6  “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at AEx 3:1Horeb; and BNum 20:10, 11; Deut 8:15; Neh 9:15; Ps 78:15; 105:41; 114:8; 1 Cor 10:4you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 He named the place 1I.e. testADeut 6:16; 9:22; Ps 95:8Massah and 2I.e. quarrelBNum 20:13, 24; 27:14; Ps 81:7Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they CNum 14:22; Deut 33:8tested the Loʀᴅ, saying, “Is the Loʀᴅ among us, or not?”

8 Then AGen 36:12; Num 24:20; Deut 25:17-19; 1 Sam 15:2Amalek came and fought against Israel at BEx 17:1Rephidim. 9 So Moses said to AEx 24:13Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with BEx 4:20the staff of God in my hand.” 10 Joshua did as Moses 1Lit said totold him, 2Lit to fightand fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and AEx 24:14; 31:2Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand 1Lit restdown, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur AIs 35:3supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set. 13 So Joshua 1Lit weakenedoverwhelmed Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 Then the Loʀᴅ said to Moses, “AEx 24:4; 34:27; Num 33:2Write this in 1Lit the booka book as a memorial and 2Lit place it in the ears ofrecite it to Joshua, 3Or forthat BDeut 25:19; 1 Sam 15:3I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 Moses built an AEx 24:4altar and named it BGen 22:14; Judg 6:24The Loʀᴅ is My Banner; 16 and he said, “1Or Because a hand is against the throne of the Loʀᴅ; lit Because a hand upon the throne of YᴀʜAGen 22:16The Loʀᴅ has sworn; the Loʀᴅ will have war against Amalek from generation to generation.”
