The Birth of Moses
Now a man from AEx 6:16, 18, 20the house of Levi went and 1Lit tookmarried a daughter of Levi. The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw 1Lit him thatthat he was 2Lit goodAActs 7:20; Heb 11:23beautiful, she hid him for three months. But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a 1I.e. papyrus reedsAIs 18:2wicker 2Or chestbasket and covered it over with tar and pitch. Then she put the child into it and set it among the BIs 19:6reeds by the bank of the Nile. AEx 15:20; Num 26:59His sister stood at a distance to 1Lit knowfind out what would 2Lit be donehappen to him.
The daughter of Pharaoh came down AEx 7:15; 8:20to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the 1Or chestbasket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her. When she opened it, she 1Heb saw it, the childsaw the child, and behold, the 2Or ladboy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call 1Lit a woman giving sucka nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?” Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go ahead.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and AActs 7:21he became her son. And she named him 1Heb Mosheh, from mashahMoses, and said, “Because I 2Heb mashahdrew him out of the water.”
11 Now it came about in those days, AActs 7:23; Heb 11:24-26when Moses had grown up, that he went out to his brethren and looked on their 1Lit burdensBEx 1:11; 5:4, 5; 6:6, 7hard labors; and CActs 7:24he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 So he 1Lit turnedlooked this way and that, and when he saw there was no one around, he AActs 7:24, 25struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 He went out AActs 7:26-28the next day, and behold, two Hebrews were 1Or quarrelingfighting with each other; and he said to the 2Or the guilty oneoffender, “Why are you striking your companion?” 14 But he said, “AGen 19:9; Acts 7:27, 28Who made you a 1Lit man, a princeprince or a judge over us? Are you 2Lit saying in your heartintending to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known.”
Moses Escapes to Midian
15 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But AActs 7:29; Heb 11:27Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and 1Lit dweltsettled in the land of Midian, and he sat down BGen 24:11; 29:2by a well.
16 Now AEx 3:1; 18:12the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and BGen 24:11, 13, 19; 29:9, 10; 1 Sam 9:11they came to draw water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 Then the shepherds came and drove them away, but AGen 29:3, 10Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock. 18 When they came to AEx 3:1; Num 10:29Reuel their father, he said, “Why have you come back so soon today?” 19 So they said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and what is more, he even drew the water for us and watered the flock.” 20 He said to his daughters, “Where is he then? Why is it that you have left the man behind? Invite him 1Lit that he may eat breadto have something to eat.” 21 AActs 7:29Moses was willing to dwell with the man, and he gave his daughter BEx 4:25; 18:2Zipporah to Moses. 22 Then she gave birth to AEx 4:20; 18:3, 4a son, and he named him 1Cf Heb ger sham, a stranger thereGershom, for he said, “I have been BGen 23:4; Lev 25:23; Acts 7:29; Heb 11:13, 14a 2Heb gersojourner in a foreign land.”
23 Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel AEx 6:5, 9sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and BEx 3:7, 9; Deut 26:7; James 5:4their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God. 24 So AEx 6:5; Acts 7:34God heard their groaning; and God remembered BGen 15:13f; 22:16-18; 26:2-5; 28:13-15; Ps 105:8, 42His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25 AEx 3:7; 4:31; Acts 7:34God saw the sons of Israel, and God 1Lit knew themtook notice of them.
