Prophecy against Moab
Concerning AIs 15:1; Ezek 25:9Moab. Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel,
“Woe to BNum 32:3, 38; Jer 48:22Nebo, for it has been destroyed;
CNum 32:37; Jer 48:23; Ezek 25:9Kiriathaim has been put to shame, it has been captured;
The lofty stronghold has been put to shame and 1Or dismayedshattered.
“There is praise for Moab no longer;
In ANum 21:25; Jer 48:34, 45; 49:3Heshbon they have devised calamity against her:
‘Come and let us cut her off from being a nation!’
You too, 1I.e. a city of MoabMadmen, will be silenced;
The sword will follow after you.
“The sound of an outcry from AIs 15:5; Jer 48:5, 34Horonaim,
‘Devastation and great destruction!’
“Moab is broken,
Her little ones have sounded out a cry of distress.
“For by the ascent of AIs 15:5Luhith
They will ascend with continual weeping;
For at the descent of Horonaim
They have heard the 1Lit distresses of outcryanguished cry of destruction.
AJer 51:6Flee, save your lives,
That you may be like a juniper in the wilderness.
“For because of your APs 52:7; Is 59:4; Jer 9:23trust in your own achievements and treasures,
Even you yourself will be captured;
And BNum 21:29; 1 Kin 11:33; Jer 48:13, 46Chemosh will go off into exile
Together with his priests and his princes.
“A destroyer will come to every city,
So that no city will escape;
The valley also will be ruined
And the AJosh 13:9, 17, 21plateau will be destroyed,
As the Loʀᴅ has said.
“Give 1Or saltAPs 11:1; Is 16:2; Jer 48:28wings to Moab,
For she will 2Or fall in ruinsflee away;
And her cities will become a BJer 44:22desolation,
Without inhabitants in them.
10 AJer 11:3Cursed be the one who does the Loʀᴅ’s work B1 Kin 20:39, 40, 42; 2 Kin 13:19negligently,
And cursed be the one who restrains his CJer 47:6, 7sword from blood.

11 “Moab has been AJer 22:21; Ezek 16:49; Zech 1:15at ease since his youth;
He has also been BZeph 1:12undisturbed, like wine on 1Lit hisits dregs,
And he has not been CNah 2:2emptied from vessel to vessel,
Nor has he gone into exile.
Therefore 2Lit his flavor has stayed in himhe retains his flavor,
And his aroma has not changed.
12  “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Loʀᴅ, “when I will send to him those who tip vessels, and they will tip him over, and they will empty his vessels and shatter 1Lit theirhis jars. 13  “And Moab will be AIs 45:16; Jer 48:39ashamed of BJudg 11:24Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of C1 Kin 12:29; Hos 8:5, 6Bethel, their confidence.
14 “How can you say, ‘We are APs 33:16; Is 10:13-16mighty warriors,
And men valiant for battle’?
15 “Moab has been destroyed and 1Lit one hasmen have gone up to 2Lit herhis cities;
His choicest 3I.e. warriorsAIs 40:30, 31; Jer 50:27young men have also gone down to the slaughter,”
Declares the BJer 46:18; 51:57; Mal 1:14King, whose name is the Loʀᴅ of hosts.
16 “The disaster of Moab will AIs 13:22soon come,
And his calamity has swiftly hastened.
17 “Mourn for him, all you who live around him,
Even all of you who know his name;
Say, ‘How has the mighty 1Or rodAIs 9:4; 14:5scepter been broken,
A staff of splendor!’
18 AIs 47:1Come down from your glory
And sit 1Lit in thirston the parched ground,
O BJer 46:19daughter dwelling in CNum 21:30; Josh 13:9, 17; Is 15:2; Jer 48:22Dibon,
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you,
He has ruined your strongholds.
19 “Stand by the road and keep watch,
O inhabitant of ADeut 2:36; Josh 12:2Aroer;
B1 Sam 4:13, 14, 16Ask him who flees and her who escapes
And say, ‘What has happened?’
20 “Moab has been put to shame, for it has been 1Or dismayedshattered.
Wail and cry out;
Declare by the ANum 21:13Arnon
That Moab has been destroyed.
21 “Judgment has also come upon the plain, upon Holon, ANum 21:23; Is 15:4; Jer 48:34Jahzah and against BJosh 13:18Mephaath, 22 against Dibon, Nebo and Beth-diblathaim, 23 against Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul and AJosh 13:17Beth-meon, 24 against AJer 48:41; Amos 2:2Kerioth, Bozrah and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25  “The APs 75:10; Zech 1:19-21horn of Moab has been cut off and his BJob 22:9; Ps 10:15arm broken,” declares the Loʀᴅ. 26 AJer 25:15Make him drunk, for he has 1Or magnified himself againstbecome BEx 5:2; Jer 48:42; Dan 5:23arrogant toward the Loʀᴅ; so Moab will 2Or splash intowallow in his vomit, and he also will become a laughingstock. 27  “Now was not Israel a ALam 2:15-17; Mic 7:8-10laughingstock to you? Or was he 1Or foundBJer 2:26caught among thieves? For each time you speak about him you CJob 16:4; Jer 18:16shake your head in scorn.
28 “Leave the cities and dwell among the AJudg 6:2; Is 2:19; Jer 49:16; Obad 3crags,
O inhabitants of Moab,
And be like a BPs 55:6; Song 2:14dove that nests
Beyond the mouth of the chasm.
29 AIs 16:6; Zeph 2:8We have heard of the pride of Moab—he is very proud—
Of his haughtiness, his BJob 40:11, 12; Ps 138:6pride, his arrogance and 1Lit elevation of his hearthis self-exaltation.
30 “I know his AIs 37:28fury,” declares the Loʀᴅ,
“But it is futile;
His idle boasts have accomplished nothing.
31 “Therefore I will AIs 15:5; 16:7, 11wail for Moab,
Even for all Moab will I cry out;
1Another reading is HeI will moan for the men of B2 Kin 3:25; Is 16:7, 11; Jer 48:36Kir-heres.
32 “More than the AIs 16:8, 9weeping for BNum 21:32Jazer
I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah!
Your tendrils stretched across the sea,
They reached to the sea of Jazer;
Upon your summer fruits and your grape harvest
The destroyer has fallen.
33 “So AIs 16:10; Jer 25:10; Joel 1:12gladness and joy are taken away
From the fruitful field, even from the land of Moab.
And I have made the wine to BIs 5:10; Hag 2:16cease from the wine presses;
No one will tread them with shouting,
The shouting will not be shouts of joy.
34  “AIs 15:4-6From the outcry at Heshbon even to BNum 32:3, 37Elealeh, even to Jahaz they have 1Lit given forthraised their voice, from CGen 13:10; 14:2; Is 15:5, 6Zoar even to Horonaim and to Eglath-shelishiyah; for even the waters of Nimrim will become desolate. 35  “I will make an end of Moab,” declares the Loʀᴅ, “the one who offers sacrifice on the AIs 15:2; 16:12high place and the one who 1Or offers up in smokeBJer 7:9; 11:13burns incense to his gods.
36 “Therefore My AIs 15:5; 16:11heart 1Lit soundswails for Moab like flutes; My heart also 1Lit soundswails like flutes for the men of Kir-heres. Therefore they have BIs 15:7lost the abundance it produced. 37  “For AIs 15:2; Jer 16:6; 41:5; 47:5every head is bald and every beard cut short; there are gashes on all the hands and BGen 37:34; Is 15:3; 20:2sackcloth on the loins. 38  “On all the AIs 22:1housetops of Moab and in its streets 1Lit all of it is lamentationthere is lamentation everywhere; for I have broken Moab like an undesirable BJer 19:10, 11; 22:28; 25:34vessel,” declares the Loʀᴅ. 39 “How 1Or dismayedshattered it is! How they have wailed! How Moab has turned his back—he is ashamed! So Moab will become a laughingstock and an AEzek 26:16object of terror to all around him.”

40 For thus says the Loʀᴅ:
“Behold, one will ADeut 28:49; Jer 49:22; Hos 8:1; Hab 1:8fly swiftly like an eagle
And BIs 8:8spread out his wings against Moab.
41 “Kerioth has been captured
And the strongholds have been seized,
So the AJer 49:22hearts of the mighty men of Moab in that day
Will be like the heart of a BIs 13:8; 21:3; Jer 30:6; Mic 4:9, 10woman in labor.
42 “Moab will be APs 83:4; Jer 48:2destroyed from being a people
Because he has 1Or magnified himself againstbecome BIs 37:23; Jer 48:26arrogant toward the Loʀᴅ.
43 AIs 24:17, 18; Lam 3:47Terror, pit and snare are coming upon you,
O inhabitant of Moab,” declares the Loʀᴅ.
44 “The one who A1 Kin 19:17; Is 24:18; Amos 5:19flees from the terror
Will fall into the pit,
And the one who climbs up out of the pit
Will be caught in the snare;
For I shall bring upon her, even upon Moab,
The year of their BJer 46:21punishment,” declares the Loʀᴅ.

45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
The fugitives stand without strength;
For a fire has gone forth from Heshbon
And a ANum 21:28, 29flame from the midst of BNum 21:21, 26; Ps 135:11Sihon,
And it has devoured the CNum 24:17forehead of Moab
And the scalps of the 1Lit sons of tumultriotous revelers.
46 ANum 21:29Woe to you, Moab!
The people of BJudg 11:24; 1 Kin 11:7; Jer 48:7Chemosh have perished;
For your sons have been taken away captive
And your daughters into captivity.
47 “Yet I will AJer 12:14-17; 49:6, 39restore the 1Or captivityfortunes of Moab
In the 2Lit end of the dayslatter days,” declares the Loʀᴅ.
Thus far the judgment on Moab.
