1 A2 Kin 25:25In the seventh month BJer 40:8, 14Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal 1Lit seedfamily and one of the chief officers of the king, along with ten men, came to Mizpah to CJer 39:14; 40:5, 6Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. While they DPs 41:9; Jer 40:13, 14were eating bread together there in Mizpah, 2 Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him arose and A2 Sam 3:27; 20:9, 10; 2 Kin 25:25; Ps 41:9; 109:5; John 13:18struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and B2 Kin 25:25put to death the one CJer 40:5whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land. 3 Ishmael also struck down all the Jews who were with him, that is with Gedaliah at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, the men of war.

4 Now it happened on the 1Or secondnext day after the killing of Gedaliah, when no one knew about it, 5 that eighty men A2 Kin 10:13, 14came from BGen 33:18; 37:12; Judg 9:1; 1 Kin 12:1, 25Shechem, from CJosh 18:1; Judg 18:31; 1 Sam 3:21; Ps 78:60Shiloh, and from D1 Kin 16:24, 29Samaria with ELev 19:27; Deut 14:1their beards shaved off and their clothes torn and 1Lit having cut themselvestheir bodies FDeut 14:1; Jer 16:6gashed, having grain offerings and incense in their hands to bring to the G1 Sam 1:7; 2 Kin 25:9house of the Loʀᴅ. 6 Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, A2 Sam 3:16; Jer 50:4weeping as he went; and as he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam!” 7 Yet it turned out that as soon as they came inside the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men that were with him APs 55:23; Is 59:7; Ezek 22:27; 33:24, 26slaughtered them and cast them into the cistern. 8 But ten men who were found among them said to Ishmael, “Do not put us to death; for we have AIs 45:3stores of wheat, barley, oil and honey hidden in the field.” So he refrained and did not put them to death along with their companions.

9 Now as for the cistern where Ishmael had cast all the corpses of the men whom he had struck down 1Or by the side ofbecause of Gedaliah, it was the A1 Kin 15:17-22; 2 Chr 16:1-6one that King Asa had made on BJudg 6:2; 1 Sam 13:6; 2 Sam 17:9; Heb 11:38account of Baasha, king of Israel; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain. 10 Then Ishmael took captive all the AJer 40:11, 12remnant of the people who were in Mizpah, the BJer 43:6king’s daughters and all the people who were left in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had put under the charge of Gedaliah the son of Ahikam; thus Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them captive and proceeded to cross over to the sons of CNeh 2:10, 19; 4:7; Jer 40:14Ammon.

11 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the AJer 40:7, 8, 13-16commanders of the forces that were with him heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done. 12 So they took all the men and went to AGen 14:14-16; 1 Sam 30:1-8, 18, 20fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and they found him by the B2 Sam 2:13great 1Lit waterspool that is in Gibeon. 13 Now as soon as all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and the commanders of the forces that were with him, they were glad. 14 So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah A1 Sam 30:17; 1 Kin 20:20; Job 21:30; Prov 28:17escaped from Johanan with eight men and went to the sons of Ammon. 16 Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him took from Mizpah AJer 42:8; 43:4-7all the remnant of the people whom he had 1Lit brought backrecovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, that is, the men who were 2Lit men of warsoldiers, the women, the 3Lit infantschildren, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon. 17 And they went and stayed in 1Or the lodging place of ChimhamA2 Sam 19:37, 38, 40Geruth Chimham, which is beside Bethlehem, in order to BJer 42:14proceed into Egypt 18 because of the Chaldeans; for they were AIs 51:12, 13; 57:11; Jer 42:11, 16; 43:2, 3; Luke 12:4, 5afraid of them, since Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom BJer 40:5the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
