Abijam Reigns over Judah
A2 Chr 13:1Now in the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, Abijam became king over Judah. He reigned three years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was 1In 2 Chr 13:2, Micaiah, the daughter of UrielA2 Chr 13:2Maacah the daughter of 2In 2 Chr 11:20, AbsalomB2 Chr 11:21Abishalom. He walked in all the sins of his father which he had committed before him; and A1 Kin 11:4; Ps 119:80his heart was not 1Lit complete withwholly devoted to the Loʀᴅ his God, like the heart of his father David. But for David’s sake the Loʀᴅ his God gave him a A2 Sam 21:17; 1 Kin 11:36; 2 Chr 21:7lamp in Jerusalem, to raise up his son after him and to establish Jerusalem; A1 Kin 9:4; 14:8; Luke 1:6because David did what was right in the sight of the Loʀᴅ, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, B2 Sam 11:3f, 15-17; 12:9, 10except in the case of Uriah the Hittite. A1 Kin 14:30; 2 Chr 12:15-13:20There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life.
Now A2 Chr 13:2, 21, 22the rest of the acts of Abijam and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? B2 Chr 13:3-20And there was war between Abijam and Jeroboam.
Asa Succeeds Abijam
A2 Chr 14:1And Abijam slept with his fathers and they buried him in the city of David; and Asa his son became king in his place.
So in the twentieth year of Jeroboam the king of Israel, Asa began to reign as king of Judah. 10 He reigned forty-one years in Jerusalem; and A1 Kin 15:2his mother’s name was Maacah the daughter of Abishalom. 11 A2 Chr 14:2Asa did what was right in the sight of the Loʀᴅ, like David his father. 12 ADeut 23:17; 1 Kin 14:24; 22:46He also put away the male cult prostitutes from the land and B1 Kin 11:7, 8; 14:23; 2 Chr 14:2-5removed all the idols which his fathers had made. 13 1Lit also Maacah his mother and he removed herA2 Chr 15:16-18He also removed Maacah his mother from being queen mother, because she had made a horrid image 2Or for Asherahas an Asherah; and Asa cut down her horrid image and BEx 32:20burned it at the brook Kidron. 14 A1 Kin 22:43; 2 Kin 12:3But the high places were not taken away; nevertheless B1 Kin 8:61; 15:3the heart of Asa was 1Lit complete withwholly devoted to the Loʀᴅ all his days. 15 A1 Kin 7:51He brought into the house of the Loʀᴅ the dedicated things of his father and his own dedicated things: silver and gold and utensils.
16 A1 Kin 15:32Now there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days. 17 A2 Chr 16:1-6Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and 1Lit builtBJosh 18:25; 1 Kin 15:21, 22fortified Ramah C1 Kin 12:26-29in order to prevent anyone from going out or coming in to Asa king of Judah. 18 Then A1 Kin 14:26; 15:15Asa took all the silver and the gold which were left in the treasuries of the house of the Loʀᴅ and the treasuries of the king’s house, and delivered them into the hand of his servants. And B2 Kin 12:17, 18; 2 Chr 16:2King Asa sent them to Ben-hadad the son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, king of Aram, who lived in CGen 14:15; 1 Kin 11:23, 24Damascus, saying, 19 Let there be a A2 Chr 16:7treaty between 1Lit me and youyou and me, as between my father and your father. Behold, I have sent you a present of silver and gold; go, break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so that he will withdraw from me.” 20 So Ben-hadad listened to King Asa and sent the commanders of his armies against the cities of Israel, and 1Lit smoteconquered A2 Kin 15:29Ijon, BJudg 18:29; 1 Kin 12:29Dan, C2 Sam 20:15; 2 Kin 15:29Abel-beth-maacah and all DJosh 11:2; 12:3Chinneroth, besides all the land of Naphtali. 21 When Baasha heard of it, A1 Kin 15:17he ceased 1Lit buildingfortifying Ramah and remained in B1 Kin 14:17; 16:15-18Tirzah. 22 Then King Asa made a proclamation to all Judah—none was exempt—and they carried away the stones of Ramah and its timber with which Baasha had built. And King Asa built with them AJosh 18:24; 21:17Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah.
Jehoshaphat Succeeds Asa
23 A2 Chr 16:11-14Now the rest of all the acts of Asa and all his might and all that he did and the cities which he built, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? But in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet. 24 And Asa slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father; and A1 Kin 22:41-44; 2 Chr 17:1; Matt 1:8Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place.
Nadab, then Baasha, Rules over Israel
25 Now A1 Kin 14:20Nadab the son of Jeroboam became king over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. 26 He did evil in the sight of the Loʀᴅ, and A1 Kin 12:28-33; 13:33, 34walked in the way of his father and B1 Kin 14:16; 15:30, 34in his sin which he made Israel sin. 27 Then A1 Kin 14:14Baasha the son of Ahijah of the house of Issachar conspired against him, and Baasha struck him down at BJosh 19:44; 21:23; 1 Kin 16:15Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines, while Nadab and all Israel were laying siege to Gibbethon.
28 So Baasha killed him in the third year of Asa king of Judah and reigned in his place. 29 It came about as soon as he was king, he struck down all the household of Jeroboam. He did not leave to Jeroboam 1Lit any breathany persons alive, until he had destroyed them, A1 Kin 14:9-16according to the word of the Loʀᴅ, which He spoke by His servant Ahijah the Shilonite, 30 and because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and A1 Kin 15:26which he made Israel sin, because of his provocation with which he provoked the Loʀᴅ God of Israel to anger.
31 A1 Kin 14:19Now the rest of the acts of Nadab and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
War with Judah
32 A1 Kin 15:16There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days.
33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha the son of Ahijah became king over all Israel at Tirzah, and reigned twenty-four years. 34 He did evil in the sight of the Loʀᴅ, and A1 Kin 15:26walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin which he made Israel sin.
