Ahijah Prophesies against the King
At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam became sick. Jeroboam said to his wife, “Arise now, and A1 Sam 28:8; 2 Sam 14:2; 2 Chr 18:29disguise yourself so that they will not know that you are the wife of Jeroboam, and go to BJosh 18:1Shiloh; behold, Ahijah the prophet is there, who C1 Kin 11:29-31spoke concerning me that I would be king over this people.  “A1 Sam 9:7, 8; 1 Kin 13:7; 2 Kin 4:42Take ten loaves with you, some cakes and a jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy.”
Jeroboam’s wife did so, and arose and went to A1 Kin 14:2Shiloh, and came to the house of B1 Kin 11:29Ahijah. Now Ahijah could not see, C1 Sam 3:2; 4:15for his eyes were 1Lit setdim because of his age. Now the Loʀᴅ had said to Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to 1Lit seek a word frominquire of you concerning her son, for he is sick. You shall say thus and thus to her, for it will be when she arrives that A2 Sam 14:2she will pretend to be another woman.”
When Ahijah heard the sound of her feet coming in the doorway, he said, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam, why do you pretend to be another woman? For I am sent to you with a harsh message.  “Go, say to Jeroboam, ‘Thus says the Loʀᴅ God of Israel, “A2 Sam 12:7; 1 Kin 11:28-31; 16:2Because I exalted you from among the people and made you leader over My people Israel, and A1 Kin 11:31tore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you—B1 Kin 11:33, 38yet you have not been like My servant David, who kept My commandments and who followed Me with all his heart, C1 Kin 15:5to do only that which was right in My sight; you also have done more evil than all who were before you, and A1 Kin 12:28; 2 Chr 11:15have gone and made for yourself other gods and BEx 34:17molten images to provoke Me to anger, and have CNeh 9:26; Ps 50:17; Ezek 23:35cast Me behind your back— 10 therefore behold, I am bringing calamity on the house of Jeroboam, and A1 Kin 21:21; 2 Kin 9:8will cut off from Jeroboam 1Lit him who urinates against the wallevery male person, BDeut 32:36; 2 Kin 14:26both bond and free in Israel, and I C1 Kin 15:29will make a clean sweep of the house of Jeroboam, as one sweeps away dung until it is all gone. 11  “A1 Kin 16:4; 21:24Anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city the dogs will eat. And he who dies in the field the birds of the heavens will eat; for the Loʀᴅ has spoken it.” ’ 12  “Now you, arise, go to your house. A1 Kin 14:17When your feet enter the city the child will die. 13  “All Israel shall mourn for him and bury him, for 1Lit the onehe alone of Jeroboam’s family will come to the grave, because in him A2 Chr 19:3something good was found toward the Loʀᴅ God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam. 14  “Moreover, A1 Kin 15:27-29the Loʀᴅ will raise up for Himself a king over Israel who will cut off the house of Jeroboam this day 1Lit and what even now?and from now on.
15 “For the Loʀᴅ will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water; and ADeut 29:28; 2 Kin 17:6; Ps 52:5He will uproot Israel from BJosh 23:15, 16this good land which He gave to their fathers, and C2 Kin 15:29will scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, DEx 34:13, 14; Deut 12:3, 4because they have made their 1I.e. wooden symbols of a female deityAsherim, provoking the Loʀᴅ to anger. 16  “He will give up Israel A1 Kin 12:30; 13:34; 15:30, 34; 16:2on account of the sins of Jeroboam, which he 1Lit sinnedcommitted and with which he made Israel to sin.”
17 Then Jeroboam’s wife arose and departed and came to A1 Kin 15:21, 33; 16:6-9, 15, 23; Song 6:4Tirzah. B1 Kin 14:12As she was entering the threshold of the house, the child died. 18 A1 Kin 14:13All Israel buried him and mourned for him, according to the word of the Loʀᴅ which He spoke through His servant Ahijah the prophet.
19 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, A1 Kin 14:30; 2 Chr 13:2-20how he made war and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. 20 The time that Jeroboam reigned was twenty-two years; and he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his place.
Rehoboam Misleads Judah
21 A2 Chr 12:13Now Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, B1 Kin 11:32, 36the city which the Loʀᴅ had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put His name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. 22 A2 Chr 12:1, 14Judah did evil in the sight of the Loʀᴅ, and they BDeut 32:21; Ps 78:58; 1 Cor 10:22provoked Him to jealousy more than all that their fathers had done, with 1Lit theirthe sins which they 2Lit sinnedcommitted. 23 For they also built for themselves ADeut 12:2; Ezek 16:24high places and sacred BDeut 16:22pillars and 1I.e. wooden symbols of a female deityC1 Kin 14:15Asherim on every high hill and D2 Kin 17:10; Is 57:5; Jer 2:20beneath every luxuriant tree. 24 There were also AGen 19:5; Deut 23:17; 1 Kin 15:12; 22:46; 2 Kin 23:7male cult prostitutes in the land. They did according to all the abominations of the nations which the Loʀᴅ dispossessed before the sons of Israel.
25 A1 Kin 11:40; 2 Chr 12:2, 9Now it happened in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, that Shishak the king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. 26 He took away the treasures of the house of the Loʀᴅ and the treasures of the king’s house, and A1 Kin 15:18; 2 Chr 12:9he took everything, 1Lit and he took awayB1 Kin 10:17; 2 Chr 9:15, 16even taking all the shields of gold which Solomon had made. 27 So King Rehoboam made shields of bronze in their place, and A1 Sam 8:11; 22:17committed them to the 1Lit handcare of the commanders of the 2Lit runnerguard who guarded the doorway of the king’s house. 28 Then it happened as often as the king entered the house of the Loʀᴅ, that the 1Lit runnersguards would carry them and would bring them back into the 1Lit runnersguards’ room.
29 A2 Chr 12:15, 16Now the rest of the acts of Rehoboam and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 30 A1 Kin 12:21; 15:6There was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually. 31 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and A1 Kin 14:21his mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. And Abijam his son became king in his place.
