1 In the AEzra 4:24second year of Darius the king, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Loʀᴅ came by the prophet BEzra 5:1; 6:14; Hag 1:3, 12, 13; 2:1, 10, 20Haggai to CEzra 2:2; Neh 7:7; Hag 1:12, 14; Zech 4:6; Matt 1:12, 13Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, D1 Kin 10:15; Ezra 5:3governor of Judah, and to EZech 6:11Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, 2 “Thus says the Loʀᴅ of 1Lit hosts, sayinghosts, ‘This people says, “The time has not come, even the time for the house of the Loʀᴅ to be rebuilt.” ’ ” 3 Then the word of the Loʀᴅ came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 4 “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house AJer 33:10, 12; Hag 1:9lies desolate?” 5 Now therefore, thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, “1Lit Set your heart onConsider your ways! 6  “You have ADeut 28:38-40; Hos 8:7; Hag 1:9, 10; 2:16, 17sown much, but 1Lit bring inharvest little; you eat, but there is not enough to be satisfied; you drink, but there is 2Lit not becoming drunknot enough to become drunk; you put on clothing, but no one is warm enough; and he who earns, earns wages to put into a purse with holes.”

7 Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, “1Lit Set your heart onConsider your ways! 8  “Go up to the 1Lit mountainmountains, bring wood and A1 Kin 6:1rebuild the 2Lit housetemple, that I may be BPs 132:13, 14pleased with it and be CHag 2:7, 9glorified,” says the Loʀᴅ. 9 “AProv 27:20; Eccl 1:8You look for much, but behold, it comes to little; when you bring it home, I BIs 40:7blow it away. Why?” declares the Loʀᴅ of hosts, “Because of My house which CHag 1:4lies desolate, while each of you runs to his own house. 10  “Therefore, because of you the ADeut 28:23, 24; 1 Kin 17:1; Joel 1:18-20sky has withheld 1Lit from dewits dew and the earth has withheld its produce. 11  “I called for a AJer 14:2-6; Mal 3:9, 11drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on BDeut 28:22men, on cattle, and on CHag 2:17all the labor of 1Lit the palmsyour hands.”

12 Then AHag 1:1Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and BHag 1:14; 2:2Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, CIs 1:19; 1 Thess 2:13obeyed the voice of the Loʀᴅ their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Loʀᴅ their God had sent him. And the people 1Lit feared beforeDDeut 31:12, 13; Ps 112:1; Is 50:10showed reverence for the Loʀᴅ. 13 Then Haggai, the AIs 44:26; Ezek 3:17; Mal 2:7; 3:1messenger of the Loʀᴅ, spoke 1Or the messageby the commission of the Loʀᴅ to the people saying, “ ‘BPs 46:11; Is 41:10; 43:2I am with you,’ declares the Loʀᴅ.” 14 So the Loʀᴅ stirred up the spirit of AHag 1:1; 2:2, 21Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, AHag 1:1; 2:2, 21governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the BHag 1:12remnant of the people; and they came and CEzra 5:2; Neh 4:6worked on the house of the Loʀᴅ of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in the second year of Darius the king.
