Jeremiah’s Scroll Read in the Temple
In the A2 Kin 24:1; 2 Chr 36:5-7; Jer 25:1, 3; 45:1; 46:2; Dan 1:1fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Loʀᴅ, saying, “Take a 1Lit scroll of a bookAEx 17:14; Is 8:1; Jer 36:6, 23, 28; Zech 5:1, 2scroll and write on it all the BJer 1:9, 10; 30:2; Hab 2:2words which I have spoken to you concerning CJer 3:3-10; 23:13, 14; 32:30-32Israel and concerning Judah, and concerning all the DJer 1:5, 10; 25:9-29; chs 47-51nations, from the EJer 1:2, 3; 25:3day I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day.  “AJer 26:3; 36:7; Ezek 12:3Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the calamity which I plan to bring on them, in order that every man will BDeut 30:2, 8; 1 Sam 7:3; Is 55:7; Jer 18:8, 11; 35:15; Jon 3:8turn from his evil way; then I will CJon 3:10; Mark 4:12; Acts 3:19forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
Then Jeremiah called AJer 32:12; 36:18; 43:3; 45:1Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a 1Lit scroll of a bookBJer 36:14; Ezek 2:9scroll 2Lit from the mouth ofat the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Loʀᴅ which He had spoken to him. Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am 1Lit shut upAJer 32:2; 33:1; 2 Cor 11:23restricted; I cannot go into the house of the Loʀᴅ.  “So you go and AJer 36:8read from the scroll which you have BJer 36:4written 1Lit from my mouthat my dictation the words of the Loʀᴅ 2Lit in the ears of, and so throughout this contextto the people in the Loʀᴅ’s house on a CJer 36:9; Zech 8:19fast day. And also you shall read them 2Lit in the ears of, and so throughout this contextto all the people of Judah who come from their cities.  “A1 Kin 8:33; 2 Chr 33:12, 13; Jer 26:3; 36:3Perhaps their supplication will 1Lit fallcome before the Loʀᴅ, and everyone will turn from his evil way, for BDeut 28:15; 31:16, 17; 2 Kin 22:13, 17; Jer 4:4; 21:5; Lam 4:11great is the anger and the wrath that the Loʀᴅ has pronounced against this people.” Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, AJer 1:17; 36:6reading from the book the words of the Loʀᴅ in the Loʀᴅ’s house.
Now in the AJer 36:1fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the BJer 36:22ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who CJer 36:6came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a DJudg 20:26; 1 Sam 7:6; 2 Chr 20:3; Esth 4:16; Joel 1:14; 2:15; Jon 3:5fast before the Loʀᴅ. 10 Then Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Loʀᴅ in the AJer 35:4chamber of BJer 36:11, 25Gemariah the son of Shaphan the C2 Sam 8:17; Jer 52:25scribe, in the upper court, at the DJer 26:10entry of the New Gate of the Loʀᴅ’s house, to all the people.
11 Now when AJer 36:13Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard all the words of the Loʀᴅ from the book, 12 he went down to the king’s house, into the scribe’s chamber. And behold, all the officials were sitting there—AJer 36:20Elishama the scribe, and BJer 36:25Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and CJer 26:22Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other officials. 13 Micaiah A2 Kin 22:10declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read from the book to the people. 14 Then all the officials sent AJer 36:21Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read to the people and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah BJer 36:2; Ezek 2:7-10took the scroll in his hand and went to them. 15 They said to him, “Sit down, please, and read it to us.” So Baruch AJer 36:21read it to them. 16 When they had heard all the words, they turned in AJer 36:24; Acts 24:25fear one to another and said to Baruch, “We will surely BJer 13:18; Amos 7:10, 11report all these words to the king.” 17 And they asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us, please, AJohn 9:10, 15, 26how did you write all these words? Was it 1Lit from his mouth, and so throughout this contextat his dictation?” 18 Then Baruch said to them, “He AJer 36:4dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book.” 19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go, A1 Kin 17:3; 18:4, 10; Jer 26:20-24; 36:26hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone know where you are.”
The Scroll Is Burned
20 So they went to the AJer 36:12king in the court, but they had deposited the scroll in the chamber of AJer 36:12Elishama the scribe, and they reported all the words to the king. 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi A2 Kin 22:10; 2 Chr 34:18; Ezek 2:4, 5read it to the king as well as to all the officials who stood beside the king. 22 Now the king was sitting in the AJudg 3:20; Amos 3:15winter house in the BJer 36:9ninth month, with a fire burning in the brazier before him. 23 When Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut it with a scribe’s knife and A1 Kin 22:8, 27; Prov 1:30; Is 5:18, 19; 28:14, 22; Jer 36:29threw it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier. 24 Yet the king and all his servants who heard all these words were APs 36:1; 64:5; Jer 36:16not afraid, nor did they BGen 37:29, 34; 2 Sam 1:11; 1 Kin 21:27; 2 Kin 19:1, 2; 22:11, 19; Is 36:22; 37:1; Jon 3:6rend their garments. 25 Even though Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah AGen 37:22, 26, 27; Acts 5:34-39pleaded with the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. 26 And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to A1 Kin 19:1-3, 10, 14; Matt 23:34, 37seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the BPs 91:1Loʀᴅ hid them.
The Scroll Is Replaced
27 Then the word of the Loʀᴅ came to Jeremiah after the king had AJer 36:23burned the scroll and the words which BJer 36:4, 18Baruch had written at the dictation of Jeremiah, saying, 28 AZech 1:5, 6Take again another scroll and write on it all the former words that were BJer 36:4, 23on the first scroll which Jehoiakim the king of Judah burned. 29  “And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Loʀᴅ, “You have ADeut 29:19; Job 15:24, 25; Is 45:9burned this scroll, saying, ‘BIs 29:21; 30:10; Jer 26:9; 32:3Why have you written on it 1Lit sayingthat the CJer 25:9-11king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will make man and beast to cease from it?’ ” 30  ‘Therefore thus says the Loʀᴅ concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, “He shall have A2 Kin 24:12-15; Jer 22:30no one to sit on the throne of David, and his BJer 22:19dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night. 31  “I will also AJer 23:34punish him and his 1Lit seeddescendants and his servants for their iniquity, and I will BDeut 28:15; Prov 29:1; Jer 19:15; 35:17bring on them and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the men of Judah all the calamity that I have declared to them—but they did not listen.” ’ ”
32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the son of Neriah, the scribe, and he AEx 4:15, 16; 34:1; Jer 36:4, 18, 23wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many 1Lit like thosesimilar words were added to them.
