1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Loʀᴅ in the days of A2 Kin 23:34-36; 24:1; 2 Chr 36:5-7; Jer 1:3; 27:20; Dan 1:1Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2 “Go to the house of the A2 Kin 10:15; 1 Chr 2:55Rechabites and speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Loʀᴅ, into one of the B1 Kin 6:5, 8; 1 Chr 9:26, 33chambers, and give them wine to drink.” 3 Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons and the whole house of the Rechabites, 4 and I brought them into the house of the Loʀᴅ, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, the ADeut 33:1; Josh 14:6; 1 Kin 12:22; 2 Kin 1:9-13man of God, which was near the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, B1 Chr 9:18fthe doorkeeper. 5 Then I set before the 1Lit sonsmen of the house of the Rechabites pitchers full of wine and cups; and I said to them, “AAmos 2:12Drink wine!” 6 But they said, “We will not drink wine, for A2 Kin 10:15, 23Jonadab the son of B1 Chr 2:55Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall CLev 10:9; Num 6:2-4; Judg 13:7, 14; Luke 1:15not drink wine, you or your sons, forever. 7  ‘You shall not build a house, and you shall not sow seed and you shall not plant a vineyard or own one; but in AGen 25:27; Heb 11:9tents you shall dwell all your days, that you may live BEx 20:12; Eph 6:2, 3many days in the land where you CGen 36:7sojourn.’ 8  “We have AProv 1:8, 9; 4:1, 2, 10; 6:20; Eph 6:1; Col 3:20obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he commanded us, not to drink wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons or our daughters, 9 nor to build ourselves houses to dwell in; and we APs 37:16; Jer 35:7; 1 Tim 6:6do not have vineyard or field or seed. 10  “We have only AJer 35:7dwelt in tents, and have obeyed and have done according to all that BJer 35:6Jonadab our father commanded us. 11  “But when A2 Kin 24:1, 2; Dan 1:1, 2Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against the land, we said, ‘Come and let us BJer 4:5-7; 8:14go to Jerusalem before the army of the Chaldeans and before the army of the Arameans.’ So we have dwelt in Jerusalem.”

12 Then the word of the Loʀᴅ came to Jeremiah, saying, 13 “Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Go and say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, “AIs 28:9-12; Jer 5:3; 6:8-10; 32:33Will you not receive instruction by listening to My words?” declares the Loʀᴅ. 14 “The AJer 35:6-10words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, which he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are observed. So they do not drink wine to this day, for they have obeyed their father’s command. But I have spoken to you 1Lit rising early and speakingB2 Chr 36:15; Jer 7:13, 25; 11:7; 25:3, 4again and again; yet you have CIs 30:9; 50:2not listened to Me. 15  “Also I have sent to you all My AJer 7:25; 25:4; 26:5; 29:19; 32:33servants the prophets, sending them 1Lit rising early and speakingagain and again, saying: ‘BIs 1:16, 17; Jer 4:1; 18:11; 25:5f; Ezek 18:30-32; Acts 26:20Turn now every man from his evil way and amend your deeds, and CDeut 6:14; Jer 7:6; 13:10; 25:6do not go after other gods to worship them. Then you will DJer 7:7; 25:5, 6dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your forefathers; but you have not EJer 7:24, 26; 11:8; 17:23; 34:14inclined your ear or listened to Me. 16  ‘Indeed, the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have AJer 35:14; Mal 1:6observed the command of their father which he commanded them, but this people has not listened to Me.’ ” ’ 17  “Therefore thus says the Loʀᴅ, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, AJosh 23:15; Jer 19:3, 15; 21:4-10; Mic 3:12I am bringing on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them; because I BProv 1:24, 25; Is 65:12; 66:4; Jer 7:13, 26, 27; 26:5; Luke 13:34, 35; Rom 10:21spoke to them but they did not listen, and I have called them but they did not answer.’ ”

18 Then Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, “Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have AEx 20:12; Eph 6:1-3obeyed the command of Jonadab your father, kept all his commands and done according to all that he commanded you; 19 therefore thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel, “Jonadab the son of Rechab A1 Chr 2:55; Jer 33:17shall not lack a man to BJer 15:19; Luke 21:36stand before Me 1Lit all the daysalways.” ’ ”
