1 Now in the same year, AJer 27:1; 49:34in the beginning of the reign of B2 Kin 24:18-20; 2 Chr 36:11-13; Jer 27:3, 12Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, CJer 28:17Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet, who was from DJosh 9:3; 10:12; 1 Kin 3:4Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Loʀᴅ in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying, 2 “AJer 27:12; 28:11Thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3  ‘Within two years I am going to bring back to this place A2 Kin 24:13; 2 Chr 36:10; Jer 27:16; Dan 1:2all the vessels of the Loʀᴅ’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. 4  ‘I am AJer 22:26, 27also going to bring back to this place B2 Kin 25:27; Jer 22:24; 24:1Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the CJer 22:10exiles of Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the Loʀᴅ, ‘for I will break the DJer 27:8yoke of the king of Babylon.’ ”

5 Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who were standing in the AJer 28:1house of the Loʀᴅ, 6 and the prophet Jeremiah said, “A1 Kin 1:36; Ps 41:13; Jer 11:5Amen! May the Loʀᴅ do so; may the Loʀᴅ 1Or fulfillconfirm your words which you have prophesied to bring back the vessels of the Loʀᴅ’s house and all the exiles, from Babylon to this place. 7  “Yet A1 Kin 22:28hear now this word which I am about to speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people! 8  “The prophets who were before me and before you from ancient times ALev 26:14-39; 1 Kin 14:15; 17:1; 22:17; Is 5:5-7; Joel 1:20; Amos 1:2; Nah 1:2prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms, of war and of calamity and of pestilence. 9  “The prophet who prophesies of peace, ADeut 18:22when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then that prophet will be known as one whom the Loʀᴅ has truly sent.”

10 Then Hananiah the prophet took the AJer 27:2yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. 11 Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “AJer 14:14; 27:10; 28:15Thus says the Loʀᴅ, ‘Even so will I break within two full years the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’ ” Then the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

12 The AJer 1:2word of the Loʀᴅ came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 13 “Go and speak to Hananiah, saying, ‘Thus says the Loʀᴅ, “You have broken the yokes of wood, but you have made instead of them APs 107:16; Is 45:2yokes of iron.” 14  ‘For thus says the Loʀᴅ of hosts, the God of Israel, “I have put a ADeut 28:48; Jer 27:8yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they will BJer 25:11serve him. And CJer 27:6I have also given him the beasts of the field.” ’ ” 15 Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen now, Hananiah, the Loʀᴅ has not sent you, and AJer 20:6; 29:31; Lam 2:14; Ezek 13:2, 3, 22; 22:28; Zech 13:3you have made this people trust in a lie. 16  “Therefore thus says the Loʀᴅ, ‘AGen 7:4; Ex 32:12; Deut 6:15; 1 Kin 13:34Behold, I am about to 1Lit send you awayremove you from the face of the earth. This year you are going to BJer 20:6die, because you have 2Lit spokenCDeut 13:5; Jer 29:32counseled rebellion against the Loʀᴅ.’ ”

17 So Hananiah the prophet died in the same year in the seventh month.
