JOB

Job’s Character and Wealth
There was a man in the AJer 25:20; Lam 4:21land of Uz whose name was BEzek 14:14, 20; James 5:11Job; and that man was CGen 6:9; 17:1; Deut 18:13blameless, upright, DGen 22:12; 42:18; Ex 18:21; Prov 8:13fearing God and EJob 28:28turning away from evil. AJob 42:13Seven sons and three daughters were born to him. AJob 42:12His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was BJob 29:25the greatest of all the 1Lit sonsmen of the east. His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering AGen 8:20; Job 42:8burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “BJob 8:4Perhaps my sons have sinned and C1 Kin 21:10, 13cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
AJob 2:1Now there was a day when the BJob 38:7sons of God came to present themselves before the Loʀᴅ, and 1I.e. the adversary, and so throughout chs 1 and 2Satan also came among them. The Loʀᴅ said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the Loʀᴅ and said, “A1 Pet 5:8From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” The Loʀᴅ said to Satan, “Have you 1Lit set your heart toconsidered ANum 12:7; Josh 1:2, 7; Job 42:7, 8My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, BJob 1:1a blameless and upright man, 2Or reveringfearing God and turning away from evil.” Then ARev 12:9fSatan answered the 1Lit Loʀᴅ and saidLoʀᴅ, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10  “AJob 29:2-6; Ps 34:7Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? BJob 31:25You have blessed the work of his hands, and his CJob 1:3; 31:25possessions have increased in the land. 11  “AJob 2:5But put forth Your hand now and BJob 19:21touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” 12 Then the Loʀᴅ said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your 1Lit handpower, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Loʀᴅ.
Satan Allowed to Test Job
13 Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the 1Lit female donkeysdonkeys feeding beside them, 15 and 1Lit Shebathe AGen 10:7; Job 6:19Sabeans 2Lit fell uponattacked and took them. They also 3Lit smoteslew the servants with the edge of the sword, and 4Lit only I alone, and so also vv 16, 17, 19I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “AGen 19:24; Lev 10:2; Num 11:1-3The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The AGen 11:28, 31Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and 1Lit smoteslew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
20 Then Job arose and AGen 37:29, 34; Josh 7:6tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 He said,
AEccl 5:15Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked I shall return there.
