Believers United to Christ
Or do you not know, ARom 1:13brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? For A1 Cor 7:39the married woman is bound by law to her 1Lit living husbandhusband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law 2Lit ofconcerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man.
Therefore, my brethren, you also were ARom 6:2; 7:6made to die BRom 8:2; Gal 2:19; 5:18to the Law CCol 1:22through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were ARom 8:8f; 2 Cor 10:3in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were BRom 7:7faroused by the Law, were at work CRom 6:13, 21, 23in 1Lit our members to bearthe members of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been ARom 7:2released from the Law, having BRom 6:2died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in CRom 6:4newness of DRom 2:29the 1Or spiritSpirit and not in oldness of the letter.
ARom 3:5What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? BLuke 20:16May it never be! On the contrary, CRom 3:20; 4:15; 5:20I would not have come to know sin except 1Or through lawthrough the Law; for I would not have known about 2Or lustcoveting if the Law had not said, “DEx 20:17; Deut 5:21Yoᴜ sʜᴀʟʟ ɴoᴛ 2Or lustcovᴇᴛ.” But sin, ARom 7:11taking opportunity BRom 3:20; 7:11through the commandment, produced in me 1Or lustcoveting of every kind; for C1 Cor 15:56apart 2Or from lawfrom the Law sin is dead. I was once alive apart 1Or from lawfrom the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; 10 and this commandment, which was 1Lit to lifeALev 18:5; Luke 10:28; Rom 10:5; Gal 3:12to result in life, proved 2Lit to deathto result in death for me; 11 for sin, ARom 7:8taking an opportunity BRom 3:20; 7:8through the commandment, CGen 3:13deceived me and through it killed me. 12 ARom 7:16; 1 Tim 1:8So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? ALuke 20:16May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.
The Conflict of Two Natures
14 For we know that the Law is A1 Cor 3:1spiritual, but I am A1 Cor 3:1of flesh, B1 Kin 21:20, 25; 2 Kin 17:17; Rom 6:6; Gal 4:3sold 1Lit under sinCRom 3:9into bondage to sin. 15 For what I am doing, AJohn 15:15I do not understand; for I am not practicing BRom 7:19; Gal 5:17what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with ARom 7:12; 1 Tim 1:8the Law, confessing that the Law is good. 17 So now, ARom 7:20no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my AJohn 3:6; Rom 7:25; 8:3flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For ARom 7:15the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, ARom 7:17I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.
21 I find then ARom 7:23, 25; 8:2the 1Lit lawprinciple that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God 1Or concerningin A2 Cor 4:16; Eph 3:16; 1 Pet 3:4the inner man, 23 but I see ARom 6:19; Gal 5:17; James 4:1; 1 Pet 2:11a different law in 1Lit my membersthe members of my body, waging war against the BRom 7:25law of my mind and making me a prisoner 2Lit inof CRom 7:21, 25; 8:2the law of sin which is in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from 1Or this body of deathARom 6:6; Col 2:11the body of this BRom 8:2death? 25 A1 Cor 15:57Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh BRom 7:21, 23; 8:2the law of sin.
