Jehoram Restores the Shunammite’s Land
Now A2 Kin 4:18, 31-35Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, “Arise and go 1Lit you and yourwith your household, and sojourn wherever you can sojourn; for the BPs 105:16; Hag 1:11Loʀᴅ has called for a famine, and CGen 41:27, 54it will even come on the land for seven years.” So the woman arose and did according to the word of the man of God, and she went with her household and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. At the end of seven years, the woman returned from the land of the Philistines; and she went out to 1Lit cry outappeal to the king for her house and for her field. Now the king was talking with A2 Kin 4:12; 5:20-27Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, “Please relate to me all the great things that Elisha has done.” As he was relating to the king A2 Kin 4:35how he had restored to life the one who was dead, behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life 1Lit cried outappealed to the king for her house and for her field. And Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, this is the woman and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life.” When the king asked the woman, she related it to him. So the king appointed for her a certain officer, saying, “Restore all that was hers and all the produce of the field from the day that she left the land even until now.”
Elisha Predicts Evil from Hazael
Then Elisha came to A1 Kin 11:24Damascus. Now B2 Kin 6:24Ben-hadad king of Aram was sick, and it was told him, saying, “C2 Kin 5:20The man of God has come here.” The king said to A1 Kin 19:15, 17Hazael, “B1 Kin 14:3Take a gift in your hand and go to meet the man of God, and C2 Kin 1:2inquire of the Loʀᴅ by him, saying, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’ ” So Hazael went to meet him and took a gift in his hand, even every kind of good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ loads; and he came and stood before him and said, “A2 Kin 5:13Your son Ben-hadad king of Aram has sent me to you, saying, ‘Will I recover from this sickness?’ ” 10 Then Elisha said to him, “A2 Kin 8:14Go, say to him, ‘You will surely recover,’ but the B2 Kin 8:15Loʀᴅ has shown me that he will certainly die.” 11 He 1Lit made his face stand fast and he setfixed his gaze steadily on him A2 Kin 2:17until he was ashamed, and BLuke 19:41the man of God wept. 12 Hazael said, “Why does my lord weep?” Then he 1Lit saidanswered, “Because A2 Kin 10:32, 33; 12:17; 13:3, 7I know the evil that you will do to the sons of Israel: their strongholds you will set on fire, and their young men you will kill with the sword, and their little ones you B2 Kin 15:16; Nah 3:10will dash in pieces, and their women with child you will rip up.” 13 Then Hazael said, “But what is your servant, A1 Sam 17:43; 2 Sam 9:8who is but a dog, that he should do this great thing?” And Elisha 1Lit saidanswered, “B1 Kin 19:15The Loʀᴅ has shown me that you will be king over Aram.” 14 So he departed from Elisha and returned to his master, who said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he 1Lit saidanswered, “He told me that A2 Kin 8:10you would surely recover.” 15 On the following day, he took the cover and dipped it in water and spread it on his face, A2 Kin 8:10so that he died. And Hazael became king in his place.
Another Jehoram Reigns in Judah
16 Now in the fifth year of A2 Kin 1:17; 3:1Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Jehoshaphat being then the king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah became king. 17 He was A2 Chr 21:5-10thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 18 He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for A2 Kin 8:27the daughter of Ahab became his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the Loʀᴅ. 19 However, the Loʀᴅ was not willing to destroy Judah, for the sake of David His servant, A2 Sam 7:12-15; 1 Kin 11:36since He had 1Lit saidpromised him to give a 2I.e. descendant on the thronelamp to him through his sons always.
20 In his days A1 Kin 22:47; 2 Kin 3:9, 26, 27; 8:22Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and made a king over themselves. 21 Then Joram crossed over to Zair, and all his chariots with him. And he arose by night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him and the captains of the chariots; A2 Sam 18:17; 19:8but his 1Lit the peoplearmy fled to their tents. 22 AGen 27:40So Edom revolted 1Lit from under the hand ofagainst Judah to this day. Then BJosh 21:13; 2 Kin 19:8Libnah revolted at the same time. 23 The rest of the acts of Joram and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
Ahaziah Succeeds Jehoram in Judah
24 So Joram slept with his fathers and A2 Chr 21:20was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and B2 Chr 21:1, 7Ahaziah his son became king in his place.
25 A2 Chr 22:1-6In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. 26 A2 Chr 22:2Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. 27 A2 Chr 22:3He walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did evil in the sight of the Loʀᴅ, like the house of Ahab had done, because he was a son-in-law of the house of Ahab.
28 Then he went with Joram the son of Ahab to war against A2 Kin 8:15Hazael king of Aram at B1 Kin 22:3, 29Ramoth-gilead, and the Arameans 1Lit smotewounded Joram. 29 So A2 Kin 9:15King Joram returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Arameans had 1Lit struckinflicted on him at B2 Kin 8:28; 2 Chr 22:5, 6Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then C2 Kin 9:16Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sick.
