Internet Bible delivery estimates for eBible.org and associated sites

The following numbers are ESTIMATES of downloads based on source server logs. They have been anonymized, and the locations have been blurred to protect the privacy of Bible readers (which is a security issue in some places).

What we count:

• Any chapter view or download
• Any Bible file download (epub, PDF, Sword module, etc.)
• Any Bible sound file download or stream

What we exclude from the counts:

• Non-Bible pages
• Traffic due to some well-known and well-behaved search engines indexing our sites
• Some traffic not counted due to logs lost to hardware or software failures
• Secondary traffic due to third-party sharing, because that doesn't show up in our server logs
• Reading activity on apps (Crosswire Sword apps or single-Bible apps) because those apps respect the reader's privacy
• Reading activity on epubs and PDFs because we don't install "web bugs" in those files

Note that counts do not equate to numbers of people. One person can run up many counts by scrolling through many chapters and/or downloading many files. On the other hand, one person might download one whole Bible and read it from beginning to end more than once, and it only counts as one download. Some downloaders are people reading the Bible in their own language. Some downloads are by researchers, missionaries, or web-crawler bots. Some activity is now due to AI training. There isn't any good way to differentiate between these cases.

Location estimates are based on logged IP addresses, run through an ip2location lite database. The logged IP address is sometimes a good indication of where someone accessed our sites from. It also might just be an endpoint of a virtual private network (VPN), the location of a satellite ground station, the location of a network cache, the result of carrier-grade network address translation (CGNAT), or similar technical exception. In some cases, the ip2location database will give a country but not a specific location, in which case we use the location of that country's capital city. Just in case the IP address location yields a fairly precise location for a person in a persecuted area, we add a random number to the lattitude and longitude to make it useless for locating any specific Bible-reading person, but still accurate enough to give an idea of where in the world people are reading the Bible.

In spite of the obvious limitations of these counts, it is our hope that they provide an indication that our Bible sites are working and that people all over the world are reading the Bible in many languages.
